    A Message to New Parents

I-day has come and gone, and you've dropped off your special boys and girls for the first step in their journey. Watching you all today, I recognized the fear of the unknown my parents must have felt in your shoes. Be proud of your kids. They have done a lot of work to be exactly where they...

Class of 2020 USNA Appointment Thread

If he is over the assigned weight, they will take the measuring tape to him. Plenty of people show up overweight actually, and lose a bunch when they start daily PT. Nothing to worry about.

    Bringing sports equipment/contacting club coaches

I think you're right, NavyHoops. Some club teams do practice, some don't. Rugby does, but lacrosse doesn't. Either way, bringing a stick and trying out for the varsity level team isn't a bad way to spend sports period until you either make the team or get cut. On days with inclement weather...

Varsity Athletics: Are they worth it?

Most everyone has hit the nail on the head, so I don't have too much to add. Yes, varsity athletics are worth the time commitment for me. They take up a lot of time which I might otherwise use for ECA's, but I'm okay with that. Yes, it's possible to maintain a good class rank with varsity...

    Bringing sports equipment/contacting club coaches

If it can fit in a duffel bag, you're generally fine to bring it. When sports period starts in the summer, your detailers will give you access to your gear. Feel free to contact any coaches you want, as they will be the best authority on what you will be able to bring or use. It's not...

    Swimming

Practice while you can, but don't sweat it. Plenty of people do not validate the swim. They then take the swimming class for 12 weeks. To validate with an 80 is a 3:30, to validate with a 90 is right around 3:00, and to validate with a 100 is a 2:46 (all if I remember correctly). People are...

    What I wish I knew before I-day

Thank you all. Feel free to post or share anything you want from what I've said. Thank you for your insight, usna1985 and NavyHoops.

Ask Me Anything - Perspective from a Current Plebe

Gruel, twice a day, pushed through a slat in the door for us to fight over. It's pretty good. Over Plebe Summer, you'll be so hungry from running around so much that it's practically gourmet. It's much better than the dining hall food at my civilian college.

    What I wish I knew before I-day

Welcome. You have no idea what you’re getting in to, but that’s okay. You’re joining a family of current mids, distinguished graduates, astronauts, and admirals. Parents, you’re about to send your kid off to college. I can’t imagine what you’re going through. To make it this far, someone in...

    Newbie Parent Questions

Plan for your mid to be back on time, with a sufficient cushion. Delays happen, and your mid won't be in trouble as long as they inform their chain of command of their whereabouts and plans to get back to the academy. Some plebes don't get to go home for Thanksgiving due to the distance, time...

    Surgery after being medically qualified.

I did not get a waiver to enter c/o 2018, as I would have been in a cast on I day. I was disqualified for history of fracture and residual weakness for c/o 2019, but was granted a waiver when my doctor said I was fully healed.

    Surgery after being medically qualified.

Been there. I was disqualified and pushed back a year because I wasn't going to be ready on I-day. The word I got from USNA was that if you'll be qualified (no restrictions on push-ups, exercises) on I day, you'll be good to go. If you are disqualified and can't go this year, I wouldn't be...

How to Prep for Plebe Summer

Learn some cadences. The same ones get boring over and over again. Please.

USNA vs. NROTC: Some Heartfelt Advice Needed

See what happens with the appointment. Go with what your gut tells you. Ask questions about academy life that you're unsure about. Visit the ROTC program. It's four years of your life, make the right decision for you.

    Nass

Everything important has been said, pretty much. I'll add that NASS is a recruiting tool rather than an evaluation tool. USNA's goal is to reach as many potential candidates as possible and to deter them from getting into something they hate. Getting a taste of the environment of the academy...
