My unit has had plenty of midshipmen study abroad and still get aviation. Things that actually matter: ASTB, GPA, PT scores. @Go Dores! is the authority though, so I will defer to him.

You're a midshipman once you take the midshipman oath at your respective unit. Usually happens at the end of whatever NSO your unit puts on.
