USS Fitzgerald in Collision, 1 Sailor injured, 7 reported missing

In my unprofessional opinion it does not appear to be a glancing blow but rather a full on t-bone! No wonder people got hurt. It will be interesting to hear more about the circumstances and which ship was responsible for the collision.

    Where to stay when touring?

Depends on what you want to do. There are a couple of nice (but expensive) hotels on the waterfront within walking distance of the Academy if you want to do touristy things and walk around old Annapolis. We usually stay a few miles inland near Town Center which is a nice new area of shops...

Class of 2017 Service Selection Stats

I don't suggest that the Navy or Marines take unqualified Midshipmen. They should all be qualified. But if USNA is below their quota for Marines, Aviators, or Subs there is more opportunity to get officers who qualify AND have a high desire to serve if you don't limit it to the Academy only...

Class of 2017 Service Selection Stats

I think Memphis makes some good points about considering all officer ascension programs together and not being so rigid about quotas. ROTC provides more officers but according to a GAO report, only 91% of their goal is met, leaving room for hundreds more assignments for service academy grads to...

    Ethnicity and admission chances

I recently heard a talk from the Naval Academy superintendent Admiral Carter and he emphasized diversity quite a bit, especially pointing out the rising number of females in the brigade and the ethnic variety of last year's top scholars. There was no mention made of any particular quotas but...

    BGOS?

BGOs are the official representatives of the USNA Admissions Office. If you are having trouble finding out who your area coordinator is then do not hesitate to call Admissions for the contact info. The staff is super nice and very helpful.

I don't know if the military is for me

I second the advice of che527. I just heard a talk from the USNA Superintendent that the number one reason that plebes drop out is because they were doing it for someone else. Be sure you want to do whatever you choose because you have the fire and desire for it.

    Club Sports

Good advice. My 1/C DS is in Jiu Jitsu which he joined in his 3/C year. It is all run by Midshipmen with no formal coach. Like many clubs, they set up participation in tournaments along the east coast and provide their own transportation to get there. If you love a sport, you will certainly...

Flooding in DTA on October 1-Yard Affected?

Just returned from 2C parents weekend. Even with a rainy game against Houston, no flooding or damage was seen on the yard. All appears well.
