I was just hoping to get a general idea of how many appointees to the Coast Guard Academy were waiting on their waivers? DD received her appointment over Thanksgiving, then her DQ soon after and we have been waiting with radio silence ever since. Just wondering if this is normal?

We are, our DD was DQ 11/21, and received her conditional appt 12/15. Academy requested a record 1/12 and confirmed they received it that day. Haven’t heard anything since.

Our daughter has been in contact as well. She is very responsive, but her answers do not give much information. It would be nice to know where she is in the cue.

I’d love to move along if more testing is needed, I know it’s mid February but I already feel the clock ticking fast!

My DD had a conditional appt in November and DODMERB done by November. Waiting on waiver since end of November. She is DODMERB qualified for her Army ROTC scholarship but needs an eye waiver for the USCGA, so at least she has a back up for her commissioning plans! Communication from the USCGA for sure could be better to those waiting on a waiver.

Our DD was DQ by end of December and we only found out last week DoDMerb was stalled wating for a permission-to-release-info form. I was clued into looking for it by someone on this forum. That form was just send in on Tuesday of this week. DoDMerb confirmed receipt same day, but status hasn’t been changed to complete yet as of this morning.

Thank you for the information. Is that form on the DoDMerb website?

We visted the USCGA last summer and we asked about DODMERB and waivers. Our Admissions representative told us that they do not look at the candidate's medical status until after they are selected for an appointment. Perhaps someone can explain the rationale behind that. DS has been in the "waiver under review" since September '23.

Good luck to all.

I would venture a guess that as the smallest military service, they have the smallest medical staff personnel wise, and they do not want to back up those individuals admissions has indicated they would like to have, by having to medically evaluate possibly thousands of applicants for medical waivers, when the majority of them would not be admitted even if given a waiver. Just guessing, but I think most academies work that way. The applicant has to be identified by admissions as being highly competitive (ie: likely to be appointed) prior to the waiver process being initiated.

Where is this form posted? I'm wondering if my DD has completed this?

I read a comment from someone on this forum whose DS experienced the same issue. So I instructed my DD to look into it. Sure enough…. Just have your child look at their DODMERB portal. Is something is missing it will say so.

DD reached out to the Coast Guard and they said it was not necessary and if they needed it they would ask for it. In addition, they said it would not hold up her waiver.

My DD got her USCGA waiver this week without filling out any forms.

How was you DD notified it came through? Did a rep from the academy email or call?
She got an email from the USCGA medical department stating her waiver was granted along with the attached waiver approval letter signed by the superintendent and her DODMERB site the same day said waiver granted.
