What hotel would you recommend that is near the CGA? Going for Candidate Experience Visit and traveling across the country. Realizing quickly it’s not so easy to get there!

Here’s a list of some offerings with a USCGA discount. It’s sort of hit and miss if you’ll get the rates depending on the dates. Also, some of the rates have changed (Hilton properties in particular) and haven’t been updated on this list.
Anyway, it’s a place to start!

I stayed at the Red Roof Inn. Cheap, and met expectations as such. It was OK enough for me, and 1/2-1/3 what the hotels on the CGA site recommend.

We are from the area and would agree that New London hotels are, meh. Recommend the Tabor Inn in Mystic which is a simple, family owned hotel within walking distance of downtown Mystic. It's probably a 15 min drive from USCGA but we think worth it. And, if you haven't found our favorite local restaurant, try Paul's Pasta in Groton.

Agree with the AirBnB / VRBO suggestion. Pricing has been comparable to the hotel options and the increased amenities make a big difference for longer stays. We only stayed at hotels twice. Both times, AIM & AEP, were only a couple of nights. For the longer stays, like Day One and Parents Weekend, it has been all houses or apartments. Much more relaxed, still close, and not more expensive when factoring in eating "at home" as compared to restaurants every day.

Of course, it all depends on your preferences.

Went Osmino's when I was there on the recommendation of our cadet tour guide. El Salvadoran food, apparently popular with cadets. Very good, large portions and reasonable prices.

The Washington Cafe and Captain Scott’s Lobster Dock is a must try - it’s in the new London side.
