I was recently admitted to USC (which I had listed as one of my seven schools on the application but it was #7/7) whereas I had listed UGA as my #1/1. I thought I'd end up going to UGA but I am really considering changing my mind and going to USC instead. However, this would change the tuition cost from a State School where, despite being out of state they have it that cadets are marked as in state for tuition purposes to a private school with 65k/year tuition. How hard do you think it will be to get the scholarship transferred? As well, I had already accepted to UGA. I was awarded the 4 year national scholarship.

Army?

If you want to transfer your scholarship the process for doing so is clearly outlined in the "additional information" area of the portal.

I'd make contact with the ROO at USC before initiating the transfer process as I believe they are involved in it and need to confirm you are coming to thier program. The Army says they basically try to accommodate scholarship transfer requests whenever possible.

Good luck with your decision!

Does the price difference affect their ability to accommodate the request?

It is possible! Not easy but possible. My son got a 4-year Army scholarship and is an aerospace engineering major. Midway through his freshman year, he decided the school he chose wasn't a good fit. He began the process of transferring shortly after starting his spring semester. He brought the issue up to his cadre and after much discussion , they pointed him in the right direction to start the paperwork. Keep in mind at the same time he had to re-apply and get in touch with the ROTC Battalion at the new school because they had to accept him. It was a long nerve wracking process and he had to navigate most of it alone. But he made it happen and was so glad he did. Commissioning this May as a distinguished military grad, honors, and 3 minors. Good luck

I believe the OP is a high school senior asking about transferring a recently awarded scholarship to a different college prior to beginning college. This is a different, and more routine, process than what your son went through.

That said, congrats to your son on navigating that process, and best of luck to him as he begins his career as an officer!

I understand the transfer process based on other posts, but just had a question. Is it possible to request a transfer to a school that was not included in your award letter or is it limited to just those? And obviously you can ask for anything, but here I mean is there precedent for it? Thanks!

Absolutely. The Army knows there will be schools where you may have applied after submitting your application. Or, perhaps you did not receive an admission decision until after the scholarship was awarded.

If you look at the scholarship letter itself, you'll note that while the top half of the letter outlines your award and the school(s) where it has been offered, the second half of the letter goes on to direct you to the list of ROTC programs on the Army website and encourages you to find your "program of choice."

Again, as had been said many times on these forums and it states clearly in the "Additional Information" section of the ROTC scholarship portal, the Army tries to accommodate transfer requests whenever possible. I think the biggest issue would be if a particular program was "full," though my understanding is that most programs are actually under their allotted maximums most years.

Thank you!! I was thinking this was the case. My son is waiting on one last admission results and I had told him that it could be possible to put in a request for a switch. He was accepted at what I thought was his number 1 choice (and this was one of the schools listed on his award letter) but he wants to wait to see the results of this other school before he commits (to a school). A totally reasonable approach, but I just thought he'd go with choice 1. So then I started to second guess myself on the transfer request part.

Thanks for your reassuring reply! These last few months have been so stressful, first with waiting on the results of the 2nd board (he won 3 year, thankfully) and now the last couple of weeks waiting on these RD admission decisions!! I think I'm starting to lose it! 😂
