As far as I know, none of the prep schools have a swim team. My daughter is currently a swimmer at CGA and I remember us researching it when she applied and thought CGAS may have been in the mix. Those who have kids that were EA to RA and are athletes. What happens if they are offered prep school? My DD does not want to give up a year of her sport and I'm afraid she would rather go to Plan B school which is D2 and the coach really wants her.
I think maybe what you’re getting at is not related to future eligibility, but more about not competing for a year while at prep school. Some may have a pool…maybe MMI or GMC (I can’t recall off the top of my head), so still possibly an opportunity to get Independent pool time depending.
As for her thoughts to move on to plan B, she’ll just have to weigh out what’s more important…swimming right now, or big picture doing the academy thing and commissioning as an officer.
I’ll also say this. While athletics are obviously important at the academy, and the athletes and various teams work hard and have the desire to be highly competitive, it’s clear sports are tertiary to academics and military obligations. It’s just the nature of a service academy.
That said, the swim team coaches do a great job working through all of the competing challenges and turn out a great product.
Looking back at the 4/c cadets this season after going through swab summer and the first part of the academic year being completely out of the pool for the better part of 4 months I thought it be a train wreck. But many of those kids were swimming best times by mid season taper meet and then conference champs. Pretty remarkable! Highest ever finish in the NEWMAC conference at 2nd place.
Lots of words to say, if attending CGA and serving in the CG is important to her, then accepting a CGAS appointment and missing a year of swimming shouldn’t really even be a question. She’d have no trouble coming back and being plenty competitive!
It’s a lot for kids to have to consider! Good luck in these final days!
