Math Placement Tests

We were at the Appointee Briefing today at USAFA, and I asked about the math placement tests. I was told the online tests are used to help the math department gauge how many sections of each course they will need to offer. There will be another placement test during BCT that will actually be used for determine individual math placement.

Calc 1 uses the programming language R. You will use that in other classes as well. Even if you're an old school calc genius, transferring those skills to R does come with some challenges. There are plenty of other classes to place out of, chem, history, languages, etc and that aren't building blocks. Take your placement exams, do your best but don't kill yourself trying to hit a home run. Base hits and walks win games.

My advice is if you've taken Calc AB and you did well in that course and/or the AP exam, try to get into Calc 2. I took all the diagnostics tests and was still placed in Calc 1, however all it took was an email to the math dept with some explanation of why I should be in calc 2 (AP score, performance in HS), and I was switched. Also if you start in calc 2, they teach you to use MATLab, which is what you'll likely be using anyway in the rest of your calc/engineering courses. To be honest, if you've taken AB, the first 1/2 of the USAFA Calc 2 course will be a review, and the rest is not too bad. Good Luck!
