Hi all,

I will be attending USNA class of 2028. I was wondering, for plebe summer, if iron supplements are allowed? I have somewhat low iron levels and I start to feel much more fatigued without supplementing iron as my body does not absorb it well. I understand most supplements are not allowed, but would iron supplements be allowed for medical reasons?

Thank you.

Yes, you can take vitamin and mineral supplements. If you want to be extra cautious you can have your doctor write a script for it- essentially a note on their rx pad to state what you’re taking.

See this page from the Class of 2027 Permit to Report, which usually does not change much on things like this from year to year.

Straight OTC is not permitted at PS. Getting something from a medical provider via Rx would be the strategy.

Detailers are normal people, if you get iron supplements or vitamins sent in a package I highly doubt anyone would care. But as ma'am said, no OTC medicines (pain killers, cold medicine, etc)

Last summer the detailers were encouraging plebes to request vitamins and immune boost liquid IV in their care packages. COVID, flu, strep, and summer hack were rampant within a week.

Haha, I remember my roommate being SIQ and having to open a care package in the doorway in front of a detailer. The box had like 10 bottles of vitamins. The detailer laughed and went "yeah seems like you could use those"

In case the above methods don’t work:

If you have a history of iron deficiency in your medical record it *should* (emphasis on should) be super easy to convince the navy docs to prescribe you a supplement. I’d bring documentation of your iron deficiency with you on I-Day and show it to medical during inprocessing, or ask a detailer to bring you to BMU sometime during the summer.

In two distinct places on the permit to report packet (medications and care package sections), it specifically says that vitamins are NOT ALLOWED. Don’t put your plebe and the chain of command in a bad position by sending it without going through the proper process. I concur with CaptMJ and Kierkegaard, if it is such a need, have a prescription and/or doctor’s note and bring it per the permit to report instructions.
