A recent discussion about aviation call signs got me to thinking about how people picked their avatar names here on the SAF. There are some good ones!!

Mine is pretty much my mantra: just do it! And year I joined.

THParent = Teufel Hunden parent = Devil Dog parent = Marine parent

I came up with it because DS went to USNA and wanted to follow in my footsteps. I told him "hey, the Navy is bigger and there are a lot more opportunities there. You should consider big Navy". Not once did he consider Navy.

rah.

Avatar or Userid. Avatar is my USNA class crest which I really cherish. It has a LOT of meaning and I'll be explaining it to Class of 28 folks for the Link in the Chain.

Userid - do I need to spell it out for you?

Avatar: The U.S. Navy seal inspired a large pin created by well-known Washington, D.C. jewelry designer Ann Hand. It was a gift from my husband at my Navy retirement ceremony. These large statement pins, coupled with a power suit, are often worn by female politicians, executives and senior civil service executives in the DC Metro area or national settings. Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright was known for her statement pins, including Ann Hand. I always feel dressed up /armored up when I wear it. Battle rattle when in civilian mode. I know I went on at length about this, but DH wowed me on this one, and he knew it. (And yes, there is a USNA crest pin…)

Userid: Basic. I should have used my Navy nickname given to me in an XO tour: Attila the Hunnette. I have a thing about starting and ending meetings on time and never being late with performance evaluations or other deadline projects. One has to provide impetus at times. Alas, I didn’t think of it when I wandered in here. (Just asking, is this place like Hotel California, where you can never check out?)

If you don’t want to squint, here’s what the avatar looks like in real life:IMG_6114.jpeg

I joined the Navy and they dressed me like a tree. I actually had lots of blue side tours, e.g. ships where Independent Duty Corpsmen earn their money. Being stationed green side however is where corpsmen made their name. Walking in the footsteps of legends with the burden of carrying on the tradition without tarnishing the legacy is a great responsibility and huge honor. I never earned the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor but I was trusted with caring for those who did.

I was curious about BOTH: user ID and avatar.

Image is a photograph of a stained glass window at Saint Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church in the North Ward, Newark, New Jersey, where I attend Mass every Wednesday at noon. I have always thought General MacArthur left out a word from what became the USMA motto. I looked at the window one day and found it there. It reads: "God - Duty - Honor - Country"

Just. Wow. Gorgeous. Your hubby has impeccable taste!

I was chatting with my friend from SLE a few months ago and she sent an image of a fish in sunglasses. I kept laughing at it because it was randomly sent in the conversation. But I honestly like it a lot and I find it as a slightly humorous avatar now.
