Get first letter from your Basic?

Received letter in No Cal yesterday. Impressed he did not use text format...real words with a real pen.
He complained of aching all over but learning 'hella lot' in 2 days.
Reported his 1.5 mile run time; and that the days last a 'really really long time'.

A short quick note...but a small scribble that said 'I miss you guys' was pure bliss for this mama.

lisah- Sweet! I am so happy for you. I am still waiting! Webguy pics are a blessing and I feel very fortunate to have them.

DH and I both agree that it's more likely she'll write her friends than us. Still no news in central NC from our BC though. We'll keep writing regardless.

Letter #3 today.... (sorry) agree with Jackson 1989 -- he said tests were best, because when done, you could shut your eyes. He went to church and said that helped. Intramurals are very good times for them!

Three letters AND lunch with Webguy??!!! Sheesh RPT, you get all the fun!

Well, the wife is pulling the watch the Noon Meal formation duty while I'm in SF today...but I'll be there watching on Friday!! (with binoculars)

Don't forget.... If you're seeing any pics of your son/daughter on webguy, copy and save the pic, and inset it into a word-doc as part of your letter to your son/daughter. They don't get to really see any pics of themselves and flight. It is always fun to look at pics of each other. Especially if the pic has a few of the flight members in it. And if you make it an insert to a word doc that you wrote your letter on, the cadre is really cool about it and don't take them away. Your son/daughters will appreciate it. later... mike....

So, I am eating my words today, having received our first letter from our cadet today. Not to mince words, he is having a hard time but plans to see it through. Of concern, he said that he has gotten no mail from us, but we've been writing him virtually every day since three days before I day. So whats with that? Do the cadre ever not allow the cadets to get their mail? It seems very implausible that none of our letters have not yet arrived.

They don't always take the cadets to get mail every day. Sometimes it's only 2-3 times in a week. That's based on performance/reward incentive; and actually to "Increase the odds" that everyone has something in their mailbox. Look at the return address on the letter he sent you, and any paperwork you still have sitting around. Make sure you have the correct mailbox. If it's correct, then I'm sure it will all catch up. With snail mail, it's quite possible that as soon as he mailed that letter to you, that he received a handful from you.

For my son, we maximized his chances of him getting a letter. Instead of one letter from the family, I would always send a letter to him on mondays. I could send more, but i HAD to send one on monday. My wife went one on tuesday. She did others also. His sister sent one on wednesday and his girlfriend sent one on thursday. Then we started over on friday, saturday, and sunday. So basically, someone was sending him a letter every day. Took a couple weeks to catch up, but he basically has between 1-3 letters every time they let him check mail. I'm sure that the mail will catch up, if it hasn't already. Best to you. Mike....

Yay!!!! 3 LETTERS TODAY!!! :shake::shake::shake:

And long ones too. Sounds like he was bored at the chemistry testing which was "super ungodly easy" so one had as much as he could squeeze in on a regular size piece of paper (both sides) - evidently he didn't want to ask for a second piece.

My favorite lines from the letters were "Me & my roomy get along very well, thank God, and have fun talking to each other with our smiled socks. Finding humor when we are at rest is making this more fun (crossed off), enjoyable (crossed off), tolerable."

Sounds like he's hanging in there! :thumb:

Mike: from his letter it would appear that he wrote it on Sunday; snail mail being what it is, I suspect you are correct that in the interim of his letter getting to us he has gotten mail. We are writing every day, sometimes short, sometimes long, but everyday as it seems that is just about the only support we can give him at this point. And Prayers!!!!!!! Thanks.

Got two letters today. He sounds great. Also said no cell phone until Recognition.

Do some of the squadrons really do that? He also said he saw us at the wall the other day when he was marching. Pretty cool.

I got a call from his coach the other day and he had seen my son and spoken to him. He told me that my son was doing very well and was very motivated.

All in all, feeling good about his first week.

Hey, got an idea from Webguy forum to share general information from our Basic's letter so anyone who has not received one can get a taste. This is a copy of a post I have put on the Webguy forum and the yahoo 2014 parent's group -

We received our 4th letter from our Basic in Cobra D - Okay here goes a brief synopsis of the letters -

First one written 6/25 by flashlight since desk light did not work - mentioned roommate from NJ and said he had lost his voice (he tends to be very loud anyway)

2nd - 6/26 - hadn't laughed all day, figured he'd laugh again after A-day - Took 2 hours to make bed then had it ripped apart and given 15 minutes to redo it. Also said it was like playing Monopoly and all 1293 Basics landing on Boardwalk with 4 houses! (Sense of humor intact)

3rd - 6/27 - laughed 30 min straight with some flight mates - Then I saw a picture of him mugging for Webguy -I LOVE YOU, WEBGUY!- with one of said flight-mates in same photo

4th - 6/28 - Flight working well as a team - small drawing of guy doing push-ups - Beds getting easier to make - Their cadre got a coin because their marching is getting good (which our Basic chalks up to the teamwork and camaraderie of the group) - enjoys his flight-mates and they are on a mission to make every cadre laugh - sense of humor still intact

Keep sending those letters and add some positive and humorous touches to help keep those smiles on the Basics' faces!

Thanks to christcorp (Mike) for the photo suggestion - have heard that some Basics will even have these confiscated but usually after they are allowed to read them:smile: We have a set of faded background shots to add to our paper for the next letter we mail.

Hey Devildog - our basic said he saw his dad's hat at the swearing in so it's nice to know they are looking for us as much as we are looking for them!

For those still waiting we waited 16 days to get our first letter back in 2007 despite sending something nearly every day.

The Basics do not get to their mailboxes everyday - I recall ours only got there only once or twice a week tops. Remember the Basics cannot go anywhere unescorted so they cannot go on their own.

Please realize that mail to and from USAFA comes and goes on its "own schedule". We live within 1 hour of the Academy. I have a daughter at a civilian college an hour to the north and son at USAFA to the south. I can mail the exact same package from the same place (usually sent priority) and she will almost always get hers the next day - his is sometimes 2 days and has been up to five days - there does not seem to be a "logical" explanation - it just is. When son sent letters home from basic they almost always arrived in bunches, and I know he recevied ours the same way...

I try to swing to USAFA at lunch and mail his letters. As of (his) Monday evening (per his letter), they had NOT been taken to the mail room, but he sounded upbeat. He said they (he and his claasmates) were beginning to laugh at things; found out one of his cadre was actually nice and laughed; really enjoys testing (they all seem to... nice break); and says kids are still adjusting to the altitude. The Basics are coming together. (Looking out for each other)

After week 1, they get into a good routine that stays solid until they march to the Valley and start a slightly different schedule..... but after the Valley, they are in the home stretch when they get back!

We got our first letter and our first smile (on WebGuy) today! She said it's "the worst time in my life" but it was a surprisingly positive & upbeat letter overall. It was written Sunday and her squadron had not yet "earned" the privilege of collecting any mail "so they are just chillin' in my box". We now know her roommate was a preppie but we don't know her name.

And she saves her first smile for the dentist visit?!?! Maybe it's sleep deprivation! :yllol:

MOZNICK-

The same thing happened to us last year with our son. We were writing at least once a day (many times twice) and had mailed letters before he even left home and in his first letter he said that he was disappointed that he hadn't received any letters!!!!! It broke my heart!!!! I could not understand how his mailbox was empty. Within days though, we received a letter saying he had received some of our letters. It all worked out but it is difficult. Keep writing. Your cadet will eventually get them!
