If anyone has questions about basic or 4 deg. year, fire away. There are a few of us 4 degrees lurking around.

It doesn't look like anyone else is jumping on this tread so I'll have a go...

Q: So is any independently organized fun allowed at the USAFA during your plebe year?

Q: Do you get ever get a chance to do any unsupervised normal college goofing off stuff: i.e. throwing a frisbee, playing catch, fly a kite, see a movie etc?

I was a commuter student during college. I lived a home with my parents and worked part-time. For a few years I envied the guys who 'went off to college' and lived the dorm life. When I got out of school I had 1/4 the debt load that they did because my education expenses were a lot less.

Q: What have you given up that you miss the most? Put another way, what are you not allowed to do or just can't do that you miss the most?

"Independent" activities--Yes, we figure out ways to do some crazy stuff. One of the main things is "Spirit Missions." This is where the freshmen in a squadron plan and carry out some sort of prank. It is better if it is extrememly complicated and funny. One of the better ones in USAFA history had to be when squadron 8 covered the cadet observatory in sheets--painted like an 8 ball. My squad was going to hang a large banner off a "prominent location" during Parent's Weekend, but that got shot down when our Squadron Commander found out (and Gen. Regni's order of "no spirit missions over Parent's Weekend").

Normal fun stuff--Yes, we have some time to do that stuff, but we have to work around our academic/military schedules. Weekends are pretty much open for personal time, so that is when we do the majority of fun stuff.

What do I miss? I miss being able to hang out with my friends whenever I pleased, my music collection, and having much more free time than I do now...and not having to worry if my room is a mess:frown:

Intramural sports.

How are the intramural sports? I will have 10 varsity letters when I graduate from high school, but I don't think I want to do varsity college sports. Are the intramurals challenging? I want to stay very actice athletically, but I want to concentrate on academics if I get into the academy.

Well, with 10 letters, they might seem easy at times. It really depends on what intramural sports you get and how "into" them your team is. I know rugby is next to murder sometimes. I'm on Ultimate Frisbee. We are more "chill," but still play hard. Just realize that nearly everyone here played some sport in HS.
If intramurals don't fit your style, you could work out/play sports in your free time.

Hmmmm Ramius -- having been at parents weekend, SOMEONE from Sq. 29 had posters put up all over General Regni's office! Was that your squadron by any chance?:thumb: It was pretty funny. My son and others got emails to check it out!

Note: there is definately time to do some "fun" things. There is even a volly ball net (and sand court) in the courtyard of Sijan. It's used a lot. Also, the 4degrees are happy to run around the courtyard as upperclassmen bomb them with waterballoons! I believe that is a weekly event!

(BTW, they were posters OUTSIDE the General's window so everyone could see them).

No, the poster's in Regni's office was not my squad.

My squad put up a 12 bedsheet banner hung from the roof of Mitch's with our squad's name on it. (Image Later) Unfortunately, someone removed it between 0230 and 0600. We were bummed out.

Of course, THE BEST spirit mission in USAFA history was pulled off by a bunch of USNA Midshipmen who gave the F-4 Phantom in your main courtyard a fetchingly different paintjob one fine evening. :shake:

Don't ask me how they did it, but DAMN it was good! :thumb:

I was fortunate enough to be able to see that, quite a great Navy day that was!

That one was pretty good...:rant2:

Still, I think the "04" on Eagle peak is the standard to beat. It has that "lasting" quality.
(Class of 04 painted the rock face of a mountain behind the academy with "04." When it was removed, the sandblasting actually took off some rock and made the 04 permanent. The cadets responsible got in huge trouble for defacing federal land though, as it is not on the academy grounds, but a national forrest.)

OK, but you missed the best part of the story. They got in big trouble for the "04" on Eagle Rock but were actually "pardoned" by President Bush who mentioned it at graduation that year! At least that's what I heard!!
