Need short term - Should he get it furnished?

Here's what I did as a 2LT at Ft. Benning: I got a room in the BOQ's for the first week of IOBC (or whatever the acronym is nowadays). Then, linked up with a couple of other lieutenants in the basic course (a WPer and an ROTC guy from Univ. of Ark.) and we share an apartment together for the next six months. This way, you get to pick your roommates. We lived like kings and got a totally furnished apartment (which I highly recommend). We each had our own bedroom and a huge living room area. There are some nice condos for rent near the airport as I recall.

My son has been at Ft. Benning since last July for IBOLC and now Ranger school (which God willing he will be graduating from at the end of April :thumb:). He is living in a 2 bedroom with a buddy from USMA at a place called Cougar Villiage. They have 1 to 4 bedroom apartments depending upon if you want to live alone or share. If you have a 2-4 bedroom each bedroom has its own bathroom so you don't share those. They are sort of dorm like but fully furnished and have a full kitchen and a washer and dryer in the apartment. DS says it is nothing fancy but is a good place to live with a mix of local college students and military members. No problems with noise or crime and the management has been very accommodating.

I hope you don't mind that I am piggy backing on this thread.

Son is going to Ft. Rucker, will be there minimum of 1 1/2 years.

His PMS, an Aviation Officer, advised to start out in the BOQ and see how that goes. Rucker requires a 90 day stay before moving out, he thinks he'll check out possible roommates during that time. PMS said on base in convenient due to the mix of schedules they have and the transportation issues (Needing to catch a bus to the flight line).

Any suggestions from anyone going to or have been to Rucker, I'm sure my son would appreciate any info.

Patentesq, thanks for the info. I will mention that to my son. I think having roomates are important to him.

WAMOM68, He will look into Cougar Village. Congrats to your son on Ranger School. I think everyone here will be pulling for him. It is a great accomplishment. He sounds like a fine young man.

Jcleppe, No prob on that. You know you and I see eye to eye on things.

NorwichDad - thanks! He passed and we attended his Ranger graduation last Friday. We are so proud of him. At lunch after graduation he said he could hardly believe that tab he was wearing was real - it has been a goal for so long now. On to the next goal = being a platoon leader in the 101st Airborne Division. :thumb:

Congrats on Ranger graduation and the 101st. He must be a fine young man. My son goes to Ranger School in September after BOLC and I'll be keeping my fingers crossed. Followed advice on Cougar Village, he is all set.

Thanks

Sounds like your son is on the same path as mine. Good luck to him!
