Sometimes headlines tell you the blindingly obvious. I don't know who composed this one but if there were any "officials" who doubted this by now, they should be looking for a new job.
Afghan recruit training is halted as NATO officials concede security flaws
"Security flaws"- do ya think so??:bang:

This paragraph is pretty concerning. Clearly there is a balance between developing close personal interactions- which you have to have to build trust and close working relationships, and ignoring security or even worse squelching even the discussion of security issues because nobody wants a contradictory message going out.

In other instances, the vetting process for Afghan soldiers and police was never properly implemented, and NATO officials say they knew it. But they looked the other way, worried that extensive background checks could hinder the recruitment process. Also ignored were requirements that Afghans display proper credentials while on base.

“Everyone admits there was a lot of international pressure to grow these forces, and the vetting of these individuals was cast aside as an inhibitor,” said a U.S. official who, like other officials, spoke on the condition of anonymity

It makes me physically sick to hear that security issues were ignored so that they wouldn't hinder recruitment of Afghan forces. My son is set to deploy within days and these green on blue attacks really concern me. I would be torn apart if he lost his life over there but I don't know if I could stand it if he died because leaders looked the other way just to meet a recruitment quota.

"Hundreds Fired in Afghan Insider Probe"

Azimi told reporters Wednesday that many soldiers were dismissed because they submitted incomplete or forged documents. He did not say whether any were connected to the Taliban or other insurgent groups, but noted that some were suspected of having had contacts with militants.

An Afghan defense official said many were ousted for drug addictions, while others did not pass biometric tests meant to weed out recruits with questionable backgrounds. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to publicly disclose details about the re-vetting process.

I'm glad to see something is being done, although this should have happened from the beginning.

Really wish the best, safety, success and God speed for your son.

From your posts I know he is an outstanding young man.

Thank him for protecting all of us.

Thanks NorwichDad. I got word from him that he arrived in A-stan yesterday, so all prayers are very welcome.

Reading today's Stars and Stripes online I found this article regarding the green on blue attacks:

"Previously rejected report is now key to US effort to curb insider killings in Afghanistan"

More than a year and a half ago, Dr. Jeffrey Bordin warned of the growing threat of Afghan troops turning their weapons on their Western counterparts — spurred largely by cultural misunderstandings and anger — and laid out a road map for improving relations in a report commissioned by the U.S. military.

His prescient analysis was quickly and publicly ridiculed by military officials, and Bordin was removed from his post as a research team leader.
