VA Nominations

Hi all! I'm new here, but have been reading the forums for a few months. So much great information! My DS completed his application in September, is medically qualified, passed CFA, and GPA, tests all great. Many leadership positions and varsity sports, and competetive sailing. Unfortunately, we are in one of the most competetive (or perhaps the most competetive) districts in VA--10th. He had an interview with our Congresswoman last week, and as I understand it, she interviews all candidates who submit an application for nomination. However, no word about interviews from either of our Senators. Should we assume that he won't get a nomination from either of them, if he doesn't get an interview? Disappointing (to say the least!) if so....Trying not to stress about this too much, though. Any info appreciated!

I don't think Senator Kaine interviews (but I could be wrong of course!). All I can say is that my son was invited to interview with Sen Warner, but who knows- Warner could do interviews more than once!

I hope his Region 10 interview went well! I wonder how many kids from 10 applied? That's a lot of interviews I bet!

Thank you! Yes, he feels good about the interview last week. There will be approximitely 100 interviews though! We learned that initially appx. 160 were scheduled, but only around 100 responded. That IS a lot! Staying hopeful....

Don't fret...DS interviewed with Sen. Warner's committee (and was told by an interviewer that he was outstanding); did not get his nomination. DS did not interview with Rep's committee; did get his nomination. You can't tell by the interviews (or lack thereof).

Hang in there and good luck!

Thank you!!! Hangin in there!!! Not coming from a Military family background, nor having any experience with this process is quite a learning experience for us. DS has been hoping for and working towards this for years. We shall see!

Something interesting that may be useful to some: One of his plans B is the USMMA, and he received an email from a Congressman in another district in VA, asking him to submit an application for nomination. I called this Congressman's office, and they are allowed to nominate outside of their district for the USMMA (but apparently not for the USNA). I have no idea if Congressmen in any other VA districts are allowed to nominate for USNA outside of their district. This may be what the "charges" that were being discussed earlier in this thread refer to. At any rate, so confusing, but also so interesting!

Only USMMA allows nominations to be made by congressmen from another district. All others require the nominee to be in their district, including USNA.

What district was that, out of curiousity?

It is district 3. What their office told me is that they receive information regarding anyone applying to USMMA, in VA, and so they reach out to them. The deadline is next week....

Unfortunately, DS just got an email from Warner letting him know he wasn't selected for an interview or a nomination possibility....This is the email content:

It is with regret that I must inform you that you have not been selected for an interview for a nomination to one of the United States service academies.

This year, Senator Warner received over 600 applications for nominations to the service academies. Consequently, the selection process was extremely competitive. The task of choosing among the extraordinarily well-qualified candidates who applied from all over the Commonwealth of Virginia was most difficult. The fact that you competed strongly for an interview is a tribute to your academic achievements and other qualifications.

I wish you the best of luck in your pursuit of a military career.

UGH.......Onward!
