Acceptance question

where as the other academy's may be down sizing given the state of the economy.

USNA is actually expanding. Over the past few years they have increased the size of the entering classes and attrition is down. Mid has indicated that starting with the class of 2014 (rumor is it will not happen this coming fall but then again could) the entire brigade will be shot-gunned and go from 30 companies back to 36 due to enrollment increases.

It is our understanding that a newly commision ensign can become a deck officer on a small cutter and a LTJG can have command of small cutter after their first tour. The CGA is also acquiring many assets by the time this class 2013 they will have received their 3rd NSC and posisibly a half dozen new Sentinel cutters. The Coast Guard is a small service only 40,000. Everybody has more responsability in this branch than in others. Their size neccessitates it.

The other military blogs are talking about a down size in assets. Too much money is being spent on a cold war military structure. Their is talk that the Navy will loose carrier groups and move towards a more rapid response format. The country can not afford the same number of ships that exixst in the current fleet nor can they afford everybodys wish list. There is also talk of the Coast Guard overseeing more humanitarian missions because their is a better world view of their mission. This is just what we have picked up reading the various service blogs. The country is broke. And the dangers are moving closer to home.

Internet blogs come in all shapes and sizes. Some have a large following of very informed individuals and others......well, let's just say they are all over the map. Certainly I would recommend you make use of all available information, formal and informal when making a choice about any academy.
