Chance Me ND NROTC

Some applications may be decided by the first board they go before, most are not. I don't see much point, irrespective of appropriateness, to call your NROTC coordinator. Even if slots are available now, they may not be available if and when you are awarded scholarship. Patience is the watch word. Go have some fun senior year.

BTW, NROTC does not award 3 years scholarships unless one is already in college. If you do decide to go there you might try for an HSSP scholarship again in the fall, or a sideload (in college) scholarship in the spring. I can't speak to your chances for those at all and a lot will depend on the anticipated needs of the Navy.

Curious question. My son's application and interview were complete in September. We have not heard a peep yet even tho they stated he had an exemplary application. Interviewer even mentioned my son's stats were better than when he went to the Naval academy and far exceed NROTC candidate and an ISR was mentioned but we never heard anything again about it. My DS was told during the interview he should list an instate school in his top 3 of the 5 choices because NROTC likes to "see this" even tho he has our instate school Iowa State University as a last resort mentally in his head. His choices in order are #1 Purdue(he was accepted into the first year engineering program), #2 University of IL (still waiting on admissions acceptance but his dad lives in IL and we qualify for instate tuition even tho we live in Iowa), #3 Iowa State, #4 Embry Riddle Daytona (accepted into AE) and #5 University of Michigan (yet to gear from them for acceptance). Anyone have any feed back with what if he put ISU at the back of the line for choices would that hurt his chances pushing other out of state colleges in the front of the line even tho U of IL is considered instate for him NROTC has no clue about him qualifying for instate due to a divorce situation which he mentioned in the interview? I told him the CEO of Boeing went to ISU and he took a situation and made it the best he could and look at his accomplishments, granted he didn't want to be an officer but it is about making the most of your situation. Like others he has worked hard and has great stats and is waiting to hear from the USNA and USAFA. He's very humble and grateful for a scholarship anywhere. I am just wondering if re arranging the college choices would not be a good thing to do at this point.

Our DD and DS listed our state university dead last on their applications. They would have left it off completely, if they could have, as they already had full merit scholarships to that university. Both of them were awarded scholarships to their top choice schools. I don't think the scholarship board really cares what schools you put on your list. Bottom line, they score your file and if you're at the top of heap, you get a scholarship. Then it is assigned to a school, going straight down your list, giving you the scholarship to the first school on your list that has scholarship slots left.

Hey everyone. I was admitted REA into ND on Monday. When I had my interview back in November for NROTC, they told me that my application would be sent to its first board at the beginning of Devember and I could be notified around Christmas time of status. Is it typical for applications to be reviewed and decided on during the first board that they go to? I know it is possible that there are no more scholarships remaining, but is it appropriate to call or email my NRTOC coordinator or the ND unit to see if there are any left? Notre Dame is quickly becoming my #1 choice over USNA, and I would do NROTC without a scholarship my first year there, however, it would obviously be great to get it. Sorry for the wordy post; thanks for the help.

Congratulations on your admittance! It was a great day when that REA decision arrived for our daughter! My question for you is, would you go to ND without a scholarship over receiving a scholarship and utilizing it at another school? If it is the latter, then I would call NROTC and find out if they do have slots left. If so, leave them as your top choice school. If they do not, move up your Plan B school to your top choice.

Congrats! Looks like all the stars aligned and you are set for the fall. Enjoy the holidays, finish your senior year strong, and get in great shape!

Coincidentally, a few hours ago, I received an email notifying me I got the NROTC scholarship. After going to check my portal, I saw that it was to Notre Dame! What a great week and early Christmas present! Thank you to everyone again for the help.

Congratulations! Enjoy your winter break knowing you've got this plan wrapped up (assuming DODMERB is already done)!

Am I screwed? I got done applying for NROTC in September and still haven't got a response. Is that meaning I'm proably going to be declined?

There are many more boards to go, so I would not say that you will be declined for a scholarship. You could be "screwed" in that you may not get a scholarship to your #1 school, if the scholarship slot are all awarded before you get yours.

Do later boards generally get less compettitive?

@ Michael R. I would probably say more competitive as more and more people are applying and/or completing their NROTC packages late. I know several people that completed their package late and will hit the December and January boards for the first time.

@jculligan Congratulations on your scholarship! Do you mind me asking when your application package was sent to Pensacola? Mine was sent earlier this week. I hope to be reviewed during the Jan board, but given that applications are beginning to pour in I think I am being hopeful....

Curious for your update jculligan. My son received a NROTC 4yr scholarship last Friday and was admitted to Purdue for AE. If you did not get your first choice college you can ask for a change and wait list it.

Aquafox7, My application was completed and submitted mid November after I finished my interview. I think it went to board at the beginning of December, and I was notified a week or two later.

flying8764, I received the scholarship the same day as your son to Notre Dame. I posted it in this thread, but you must have missed it. Congrats for Purdue though! It would have been my second choice.

Fantastic! Congrats! I am sure it has been a long, exhausting yet exhilarating past few years! My son has been working on this path since he was 9 and has wanted to be a military officer since then! Enjoy your life and the gifts presented to you through your hard work and talents and pass them forward by serving and helping others! Thank you in advanced for your service!
