Summer Seminar

Son is currently working through the application now. I haven't looked at it. Is he going to need to have teacher's complete references for it? I know if application is due January 15. I just want to make sure that if he does he gets those requests in before school lets out for break so he isn't one of those kids who asks for a reference in January the day before applications are due.
As far as I can remember, the SS does not require any teacher recommendations.

I was wondering about essays too. DS is struggling with the overcoming a challenge one, he feels like any of his "challenges" are minor nuisances and is concerned he would sound petty to write about them but is also worried about leaving it blank.
Your DS should be very worried about leaving it blank. Encourage him to be creative. The challenge does not have to be a negative experience.

Thanks for all the advice. I think right now that essay is on the back burner. ACT tomorrow, midterms next week, Boys State application due next Friday then he'll work on summer seminar app. In the meantime, club sport, hs sport, job, tutoring. Nothing nobody else is doing I'm just glad to see that he has the prioritizing figured out.

Meant to say, nothing nobody else isn't doing. We know all these kids are working hard.

Just found out PSAT scores are delayed until Jan 7th. Do you think he should just go without them? He has a 2160 SAT and currently a 32 ACT (hope he improved that yesterday) so scores are solid but he is hoping for NM so would it help to wait?

Finished Boys State app...here's to hoping.

If your DS already has a solid SAT score, which happens to be pretty good, the PSAT score will not matter. IMO it won't make a difference if you wait or not.

Is my state just later than others, or am I missing something here. Y'all are saying that you have completed your Boys State applications, and the Texas Boys State application doesn't open up until February. Am I missing something?

His school had a deadline of Dec 18th. I guess to make more cuts before final deadlines? I'm not sure exactly, its our first time with Boys State.

When my DS submitted SS application many years ago he heard the first part of February. When he came back after having attended, he went to USMA..LOL

Is the admission board for the summer seminar strict on the ACT score? I currently have a 23.. I know that is very low I just hope they do not focus on just the ACT score because I would love to attend

My DS applied with a 24 and was accepted

Does the admission board look for diversity? I am a female minority from Arkansas. I figure Arkansas is one of the least represented states at the Academy

Should I put my SAT scores on the application or leave that section blank? Someone told me that if your SAT scores are not good enough on your summer seminar application that when it turns into your preliminary application it will hurt you. Right now I have about average and a little below average scores: 680 M and 580 CR. Do you guys think that I should still put these on my application?

Hey I put lower scores in and I was accepted for summer seminar at usna. I also recieved an LOA now. Put them in anyways bud. I hope this helped.

advice for your son- boys state will actually benefit him as far as making his application more competitive. the SA's LOVE boys and girls state. they encourage it. i attended usna & usafa ss's and i can say it was an amazing experience, but in no way, shape, or form did it benefit my package. it is only a glorified, lengthy college visit. just making sure you were aware, so if he has to chose b/w the two i would suggest boys state. but it does sound like he's off to a great start!

Here's something to keep in mind...I remember making a similar post last year too when people were starting to hear back about SS...:D

Summer Seminar will not get you into USAFA, and it absolutely won't keep you out. I was flat out rejected for SS (on Valentine's Day, too...ouch!), but I still received an appointment in March of the following year. I'm pretty sure that most of my fellow freshmen haven't done SS either. Not to belittle those who are accepted, but IMHO it really doesn't matter that much whether you get into SS or not. What does matter is how you spin it if you use it as a talking point in your application essays. If you get in, talk about how SS inspired you to pursue a cadet's life, with all the associated challenges and rewards. If you were rejected, explain how you harnessed your disappointment to push yourself further, and how you resolved never to be rejected by USAFA again. In either situation, I would argue that that essay will do a lot more for your application than just mentioning you attended SS. Just an idea...

I just finished my application for SS and I'm wondering how I should contact my ALO. Should I call him or email him to introduce myself?

Sorry for posting this here, I thought this question didn't need to be its own separate thread and I felt this is a little relevant to the topic. I am also new to this forum!
