AFROTC to AROTC

Thompson, I'm just confused with what the difference would be between me doing AROTC now and me starting it between my sophomore and junior years with the exception of the catchup I would have to do. If they would let me go into AROTC my freshmen year of college, why would they not let me two years down the road? Now I know that in conventional ROTC programs you have to contract after the second year if not on scholarship, but I don't think this is true for an SMC as long as the cadet is not on scholarship. I know that this post is long and convoluted but I would appreciate any clarification. Thanks again.

.... because in 2 years down the road, that Mission Set probably has ALL of their contracts allocated. (If there is a pie, with 5 slices - then 1 slice each is given to 5 people, how many slices will there be tomorrow?)

.... and I'm pretty sure SMC's aren't that different from other ROTC programs, in that, you need a CONTRACT to commission. Just because you go to an SMC, doesn't entitle the program to special treatment ...

... This isn't really that hard a concept to grasp. I don't know, maybe someone else can explain it better than I can.

Take a look at the first bullet point. Without a scholarship (assuming you are medically & physically cleared), you still need to be recommended by the PMS for commissioning. Things get a bit sketchy in your case, if you have not completed two of the four years of Army ROTC.

Since you are asking a question that basically pertains to yourself and your individual case, the only place you are going to find your answer is through the Army PMS at Virginia Tech. Reach out to him/her. Good luck and let us know what the answer is!

Quite a few cadets I know did join Army ROTC after not getting picked up for Field Training at the end of sophomore year. They all went to CIET that summer and subsequently started AROTC as MS3s. A couple of them even got picked up for scholarships. AROTC does have a 2-year program - I don't know whether it's gotten more restrictive now than it was two years ago, but I'd say that your chances are pretty high of being able to do this if you don't get an EA.

DS knows a cadet now who was medically DQ'ed from AFROTC this semester that is now in the process of switching over to AROTC to begin as an MSIII. That cadet will not be going to CIET because the PMS accepted his first two years as a GMC in AFROTC and received credit for them, which is why that cadet will not attend CIET.

DS was not selected for field training three years ago, and was allowed to switch to AROTC. They gave him credit for only one year so he picked up as an MS2 the following year.

I take back what I said about not needing to attend CIET for those who have completed two years of GMC. DS says his friend IS in fact attending CIET after being medically DQ'ed from AFROTC.
