I am starting AFROTC this fall and will most likely be contacting. I am just curious, do contracted AFROTC cadets receive a military ID card? If so, what type? I have tried do find the answer online, but cannot find any straight up facts. Thank you!

My DS is a contracted AFROTC cadet. He received the standard "Geneva Conventions Identification Card" which allows him to access some benefits. I believe only contracted cadets can get the ID card.

Not sure how AFROTC does it but, my ds was a 3.5 year winner and didn't get his id until his second year a half year after he contracted. Mostly because Cadre had to set up appointments on post for processing. So my best guess is nothing happens until contracting is done, then clearance paperwork and other paperwork at Id place.

Getting the ID was it's own process. First DS had to contract, then cadre needed to get some paperwork done and make an appointment at nearby base where the ID was issued.

This is meant with kindness, but honestly as a freshmen there really is no need impo to get the card. They will give you all the uniforms you need as a cadet, minus sneakers, socks and undershirts. BXs vary in size, and not necessarily the cheapest place to buy if you are looking for a sale. Unless you are somewhere with a large BX, I would say no need to get the card until you go to for your summer training. Medically you will not use the base hospital....no need there. Want to travel Space A, you are at the bottom of the list, so hopping is not really practical, especially if you are not by an AMC base.

I live in No VA and have huge bases nearby, but in the last 7 years, my family and I (now retired) have only gone on base 2x for shopping and/or medical reasons. Both times was to purchase items for our DS from the military clothing sales store (Blues and Mess Dress). Don't get me wrong I have gone on base, but it was for things like military balls, and my DSs wedding, something that I would not need a military id, just a pain in the arse if I didn't because I would need to go to the visitor center 1st and checked in.
~ I went so infrequently that my card was expired for 4 years, and only renewed it because DS is an O2 now and he wanted to show his airplane, thus I HAD to renew it. If it was not for that, I would still have an expired ID.

No need for the card as Pima has said since you will receive no benefits besides being able to get on base and purchase items on your own. The process has changed since Buzden's DS went through in that when you contract you will wait ~1 month to be entered into the system. At that point you can get the regular old CAC card instead of the "green card" that others used to get. 2015 was the first year they started issuing CACs to ROTC cadets.

Edit: Just talk to cadre after you contract. You will have to get someone to take you on base with a CAC card to get it printed. Literally takes like 15 mins.
