USNA Class of 2021: LOA Already in June 2016!?!?!

So, not going to USNA, but I went to NASS in 2015. No one there was honored like this kid with an LOA, but people did get recognition for performance and attitude. Like people have been saying earlier, don't panic. Honestly kids like him should be honored...I did not know ANYONE as on top of it as he is (especially in June!) Good for him though, seems like he definitely has a set place in the class of 2021, especially since I'm sure Louisiana will not be a difficult place to secure a nomination from. However, he still has to wait a few more months until he actually finds out he got in. When I applied to USNA, I can tell you that LOA's scared me, but I was even more anxious when I had friends getting accepted in September! I didn't hear back from Navy until April! I completely agree with the anxiety heightened by the accessibility of our applications. I had a friend find out about his nomination to West Point via his application portal (it was on his application before he got a letter from his representative) and I can't tell you how many times I checked my USNA portal in hopes I would find out about a nomination there. Unfortunately, it was a letter that would end up telling me I did not get one, but that's the college application process. My advice to applicants is don't be worried. I did finish my application before I did my nomination interviews in early December, but I finished it at my own pace and took my time doing it. There are so few LOA's given out a year, and fewer and fewer as the years go on. I'm going to USCGA and have heard kids getting LOA's during AIM (July), and then stories of some cadets finding out they were admitted a week before Swab Summer begins. In the end, they are at the same place: a swab. Good luck to class of 2021 applicants! :)

I don't even know what part of the roller coaster that is... Maybe stuck at the top? Or it stopped right before it got back to the platform to get off? Good luck NWTLF. Pulling for yeah.
+1
Shocking when I first heard about it, but I believe historically there are withdrawals from USNA in the last few weeks up to I day. Hang in there and BEST OF LUCK, @NTWLF ONE !

Thank you for the best wishes. My son is still on the wait list for USCGA as well...talk about a roller coaster....it is a double, reverse, inverted one...:)

My guess is they are down to just a handful of kids left on the W/L and they know at this point how many historically fall out prior to I-Day. Probably a close 1 to 1 ratio, so we are still hopefull.

For any past applicants, is it true candidates have to do more essays through the mail.

My daughter is an upcoming.senior in high school. She's completed her candidate fitness assessment test. Does anybody know how those 6 event scores get converted over to the 0-100 point scale?

I heard a rumor that they don't get converted to an actual out of 100 scale and that's why you never receive a score such as that to begin with. (On my online app it only says the date the score was received and got there while I was still at NASS.) A passing score on the CFA is required but I think "passing" varies by candidate (if you've got a 36 ACT and lots of leadership experience on your app then I think they'll be okay with 12 pull-ups instead of 18) and the importance of your CFA diminishes with the weight of the rest of your application. I know at SLE kids did receive numbered scores out of 700(?), though.

I am fairly new to the process so this is all speculation. I have not talked to actual USNA admissions officers and those are the ones you should talk to. I suggest going here: http://www.usna.edu/Admissions/Contact-Admissions-by-Email.php They have been speedy with their replies to me.

They won't give the recipe of the secret sauce. In fact, look at it as a training thing. A lot of things in the military are like this for promotions, boards, etc.

Okay different questions -- for the CFA, I see online the max scores and then I've seen average scores but I can't tell if the averages are just for anybody who got their scores into the system or are for admitted students. Does anybody know averages for admitted students for each of the 7 events? And about what percent of admitted females complete at least one pull-up. AND finally, I see alot online about candidates treating those max scores as their goals. Do applicants really re-take the CFA multiple times to get to the max, or as close as possible, for each one? That seems excessive. If we knew the averages for actual admitted students, then we could see where my daughter's scores fall in the range from average up to max. Then, as was mentioned above, take confidence in knowing that the academic and sports team portions of the applications are very strong.

Sorry to annoy with another post but I figured I'd just ask directly if these scores below would suggest a need for a re-take -- for a female:
Bball throw = 57 ft
pull-ups = 2 (incredible accomplishment!!!)
shuttle: 9.05
sit-ups = 95
push-ups = 48
1-mile run = 7:04

The more important question is does she think she can do better? If she thinks she has reached near her max, move on and focus on the other parts.

In my opinion no. That's 3 near-maxes/maxes. For the pull-ups I think due to the fact that girls have the option of not even attempting a pull-up at all (they can just hold themselves up at the bar and I don't think they even list a max for that) one can assume that it's not a terribly important part of the CFA for them. At the same time, though, you wanna do everything you can to look your best as the detailers told us at NASS. If you're worried about her mile time just know that the max mile for the boys is 5:20 and at NASS there were maybe 3-5 kids out of hundreds that I saw at least who actually made max for that.

Again, I am just a candidate and this is a good question for her BGO. I can be wrong as I just found that our scores do get converted to 100 unlike what I speculated as on the website it states "Candidates' raw scores will be converted to scale scores (0-100 points) based upon their performance on each event," though, I'm still pretty sure we never see that out of100 score.

I think she is close to her best. Could probably add 2-3 pushups since she only trained for a few weeks. And maybe some marginal improvement in mile time. Probably not enough to make it worth it,. While she is an athlete, her academics are her strength.

Thanks for all the feedback! She's lucky she could do any pullups because she is very tall with very long arms. So I'm pretty sure she is moving on to other parts of her application! Onward and upward.

You cannot contact due to the summer seminar. My admission councillor is busy with that when I tried to email him. Wait until July to see a response from him/ her.

Well I was on the waiting list this past year but torn my ACL and was pulled off and I am re applying. What admissions like to see is that a candidate isn't satisfied with their score. They want to keep improving and striving to get better scores, but CFAs are not super scored. You have to submit one final CFA exam where you think you did your best well rounded. I say take the CFA again in a month or two after a some training. If you get better numbers, you turn more heads. If not, then you did your best and reached your max and said you gave it your all. One can only improve.

Plus you can keep submitting new CFA scores all the way up to the deadline. That's what I did this past year. I took the CFA 3 times and improved each time in categories.
