Hey! I applied to The Citadel recently, and I was wondering as to what my chances of acceptance are (I'm entering my Senior year of HS after the summer).

ACADEMICS:
-Unweighted GPA = 2.75
-Weighted GPA = 3.27
-ACT = 22

EXTRACURRICULARS:
-JROTC freshman and part of sophomore year.
-Cross Country part of junior year.
-FCCLA sophomore year.
-Anime Club junior year (secretary officer).
-Political Debate Club freshman and part of sophomore year.
-Basic Leadership Training graduate.
-Non-Commissioned Officers' Association medalist.

The application also asked me about suspension at school, and I said I received 4 days of ISS for skipping study hall.

I applied early June 2016.

Any input is appreciated! Thanks!

With a nearly 80% acceptance rate, your chances of getting into the Citadel are very high--good luck, and don't skip study hall again!

Thank you! It's always refreshing to hear input like that. And I don't plan to!

Glen is the best source of information about The Citadel admissions on this page. PM Glen. I see no SAT score. Did you not also take the SAT. You will have a chance to take the SAT and or the ACT again. Take some prep classes and try and make the best scores you can. Here is a link to the profile page of freshman admitted to The Citadel. Realize the profile is an average... there are students with higher numbers admitted and lower numbers admitted.

If The Citadel or where ever is what you want then do what you can at this point to make your application look better. Don't just sit back because somebody on a forum says chances are good cause The Citadel has an 80% acceptance rate...

Again reach out to Glen he is a volunteer in the admissions department and will be a good source of information. My DS is a 2015 Grad and feel free to PM me if you have any questions about the general Charleston area. What is your state of residence? From screen name maybe Tx?

Hi Kamtx - I am an alumni volunteer in the mid-atlantic area with the Admissions Office at The Citadel. I will put this infomation out on the forum for general interest. If you have specific questions - please do PM me and I will try to get an answer.

The average test scores you posted are I am afraid low for the Corps of Cadets. And while there is no necessary disadvantage for out of state applicants, the Corps of Cadets is typically 50% from South Carolina. So if you are on the bubble, having stats below the average may give you an indication of chances. The average ACT Score for accepted Cadet applicants the last couple of years is 25, and the average high school GPA is 3.6 on a 4.0 scale.

These are the mid point - some are higher and some are lower. As high school standards vary so much - it is difficult to say how weighted grades are viewed. But I don't have insight to this process at the Admissions Office. I would say in general that it would be important to understand if a student has improved their grades in 2d and 3d years of high school. Many students take the SAT and the ACT over if they are not satisfied with their scores? The school only considers the highest score so there is no penalty in taking the test as many times as you think it may be helpful to so. There is balancing between test scores and GPAs. A higher test score may help balance a low GPA average. But this has a limit.

As for extracurriculars - the college prefers well rounded students versus narrow focus. So it is good to have a variety of interests listed. The Citadel is all about persistence and not giving up in the face of adversity. So staying with for example a varsity sport - even though you are not a star or even if you don't get a letter, is better than dropping it. Community volunteer work is also very important to see. The college is committed to teaching Cadets that service to community is a citizen obligation, and showing you are involved in several volunteer activities is important. You can't have too many volunteer activities.

Hope this helps

Glad Glen picked up on the thread. He is much more qualified to give you concrete answers than 80%...Like we both said, take the SAT and if you have too, take it again. Check your school for an SAT prep class the first semester of this year. Take the SAT as soon after the class as possible. And then if a second semester class, usually math one semester and English the next, retest the SAT as soon after the prep calss before the summer deadline to turn the scores in to The Citadel. It will show you are putting forth effort. The classes are very valuable and it is not uncommon to see over a 100 point gain in both Math and English. My DD had a good solid background and just met with a couple SAT prep tutors (volunteer teachers) and received test taking tips that pushed her score up dramatically.

I started to mention the community service aspect also... I am not sure if that info can be updated on your application at this point, Glen should know... but things like volunteering at food banks, volunteering for relay for life etc. show community involvement. And also it gives one satisfaction to give back, the real reason to volunteer...

Good Luck..

Kamtx: Cluelessparent mentioned taking the SAT in addition to the ACT. A lot of applicants do take both, but the main point is to see if you can improve your score on the one you feel most comfortable taking. The Citadel only considers the math and verbal portions of the SAT if you take this. So focus on prep courses that help you increase scores in these areas only. As for volunteer efforts. While the college application is brief and the school does not specifically tell applicants to submit additional information - in the past, Admissions Counselors have been receptive to additional information on a candidate. I have often called the Admissions Office and found them quite interested to know of important information on an applicant. They will talk with applicants on the phone and do keep a file until decisions are final. So - like anything in life - the more initiative and interest you show, the more likely you are to have the other side show interest in you. I have had counselors tell me that developing a relationship that tells them the character of an individual and their desire is helpful in making final decisions. For example, discussing grades that may appear average but do not tell the story of hardships overcome in personal situations - with supporting facts - may often help the Office understand a low average GPA.

But - at the end of the day - you must be capable of doing the work. Absent a scholarship or being indepently wealthy - most Cadets will end up paying some portion of their cost of attendance. You don't want to enroll without the ability to be successful. This leads me to a suggestion for anyone whose high school experience is less than successful - consider a year in Junior College - or community college. Taking college level courses will give you the confidence you need to succeed, be the best evidence you are capable of college level work, and if appropriate care is taken will allow you to get credit for these when you do enroll in college. Plus - you are a year older and more mature. Good Luck

You've gotten great advice. You can pull up information regarding just about any college by typing in "freshman profile INSERT NAME OF SCHOOL" in to the search engine of your choice. http://www.collegedata.com/cs/data/college/college_pg01_tmpl.jhtml?schoolId=1461. Good luck.

Great info, and as this site provides, you are right in range with your ACT score of 22 (and you're a junior, with another year of learning to go)--Citadel's "ACT Composite 20-25 range of middle 50%" ...there may be people above 25, BUT there were just as many BELOW 20!
Keep your chin up, keep doing well in your studies, make sure you do a decent job on standardized testing, and relax... you will get in.

Please understand no one is trying to dampen your spirits. I am not sure you are even following the thread anymore. The point is, no matter which schools are on your list, contact someone in admission or volunteers that recruit for the schools and get advice. You are entering your Junior year and you have time to stick your nose to the grind stone and improve your application. I understand you are curious where folks think you stand / what your chances are, but this is just an internet forum where some have just googled the same information you can find yourself. And then again, some members here are currently working hand in hand with schools and can offer sound advice, not just statistics.

Just don't be satisfied with looking at the statistic provided on line and saying I'm OK, I am at the 50% mark. Get in there and do what you can and leave it all on the table. It may sound cliche but that is what you will do if you truly want it and regardless of the outcome, you can then be satisfied. GOOD LUCK , hit it hard!

Can y'all give me notes.

My SAT Score was a 1050, ACT Score a 20, I just retook waiting on new results.

My Weighted GPA; somehow based on a 4.0 scale is a 3.30.

I have quite a few bits of Leadership, such a participation in programs as Civil Air Patrol, and Leadership in Employment, etc.

Any thoughts

Average SAT for the Class of 2024 was around 1120 - so you are in "the range". Are you pursuing ROTC scholarships? The Citadel is an expensive proposition without scholarships.

I am applying for AROTC scholarship, I hope to increase my SAT score more, by the way, I just got my new ACT score, which is a 22, so a steady improvement.

You're going to REALLY up that for any kind of ROTC scholarship I suspect

What major are you looking at pursuing? Some of them at The Citadel are academically rigorous with the addition of the Corps of Cadets lifestyle.

Citadel can be a life changing experience but it can be quite harsh and $$$ if you don't have the academic chops

Good luck to you.

I'm actually enlisting into the Army with the SMP Program. A benefit being I'll be able to get my school paid for

If you are applying to the corps of cadets, you've got nearly a 90% chance of being accepted! Good luck.

Oh really? I wasn't aware of this? I submitted my application for Corp of Cadets, for the Army

From niche.com

The Citadel admissions is somewhat selective with an acceptance rate of 75%. Students that get into The Citadel have an average SAT score between 1050-1230 or an average ACT score of 20-25. The regular admissions application deadline for The Citadel is rolling.

I cannot attest to the validity of that statement.

Well assuming this info is correct, I would think I have a solid chance of getting admitted...

I'll let you guys know whenever I receive a decision, because if I get accepted I will commit to the school
