I am going into Junior year and by the time i have completed hs i hopefully will have completed the following things

Academically

Good news is you have time. I would stress the importance of your grades, SAT, and your physical fitness. But I'd also add that you should continue to be involved and strive to be well-rounded. Seems like you are on the path to success. Hope it works out for you!

My son was accepted into both and your grades / Activites are very similar. I'd say you have an excellent chance. Sorry about your father. I too lost mine at a young age.

Goblin324 - I don't believe anyone can give you assurances of acceptance as most college admissions change from year to year. However, as for GPA - I do know The Citadel will accept your high school's weighted average based on their criteria. The Admissions will of course check the transcript and determine if the high school's weighting of greads seems reasonable based in the individual classes taken. As for personal or family issues - The Citadel is a small college and at the time you are submitting your application you might also call the Admissions Office and ask to speak with a counselor as to whether a letter explaining any particular semester academic issues would be helpful. This is not only for acceptance, but also for consideration for financial aid you may be eligible to receive. Best of luck.

Based on your activities/grades and because you asked for an honest estimation of your chances:
Getting into VMI may be tough, but you will get into The Citadel.

How does VMI or the Academies view going the community college route first in order to get grades up for admission and does it help with Academy prep schools?

Zisco Kid. Virginia has the Pathways to Baccalaureate Program--at the community colleges. Each public university lists exactly what you need to take at the community college to transfer into the public university. So for VMI and VA Tech, the direction you need to take is very clear and listed openly on their website. As a high school student, you can spend a little time looking at those requirements (and if you are VA resident, if you meet those requirements--take those classes and earn the correct GPA, the public university will accept you. If you are from out of state, the pathway is less clear but a call to the admissions office (try VMI, it is smaller) will help to quickly clarify that issue.) However, it is November, you can take the SATs one more time, bring up your GPA at the mid-term--or write compelling essays. VMI and VA Tech have essays--tell your story as much as you can. For VA Tech, if you want the Corps of Cadets (which comes with an application fee waiver)--be sure to check the Corps of Cadets box--and be sure to answer the essay question about how being in the Corps of Cadets will help you to achieve our life goals. It is two early in the year to count yourself out of anything. Press on!

For citadel 80% who apply get in only about 25% actually go. For VMI it is all about applying early to get your spot. In high school I had a 4.0 gpa got wait listed from vmi then couldn't attend because I applied late and the slots for the next class got filled. Send in your application asap. Even if that means tonight. You got good stats to get in both. Look at va tech , Gmu, UMD too

Well said. VMI's admissions are very selective and stringent. Definitely worth it to get your application package in ASAP.

For The Citadel - applicants who have been accepted to date for Fall of 2017 entering class, the statistics are as of December 2016:
applicants 1,745 / accepted 881
Average deposit SAT score: 1163 (math/verbal only)
Average deposit GPA: 3.74 (weighted for AP and Honors courses)
These are averages - won't qualify you for any merit scholarship awards.
Good Luck

To clarify, The Citadels matriculation rate is 40% and unfortunately that's what is driving the high acceptance rate. Probably several reasons including being a second or third choice for many and out of state families who cant get needed financial aid. Add to that the challenge of filling freshman classes that are 60% larger than VMI
