Hello Service Academy Forums,

I am currently in the process of applying to The United States Air Force Academy as a Freshman in college. I applied to USAFA last year and got a nomination from the Congressman from my district, however, unfortunately I was not offered an appointment. I am currently participating in my college's Army ROTC program since I was offered a three year scholarship through Cadet Command, but my heart still lies with the Air Force Academy.

I finally made the decision to re-apply this month however I know I am VERY late to submit my application and get my nomination forms in. I had a some questions I was hoping someone could answer to help me with this process.

1) Is it too late to apply this year?
2) If I do contract with the Army, will I not be able to apply to USAFA next year?
3) I have friends applying to USNA and USMA that are currently in ROTC and they were able to use their PMS as their nominee to their respective academies. Can the same be done for the AFA even though I am in Army ROTC?
4) My Congressman's deadline for their nomination application past two weeks ago, is their a chance I would be able to call them and ask if I can still apply for a nomination?

1) It is not too late to apply. The deadline for submitting the Pre-Candidate Questionnaire online is December 31. But, as you know you are behind on getting a Nom.
2) You will be able to apply to any of the SA and you will not have to payback your ROTC scholarship.
3) Only AFROTC or from a Honor Military School. From USAFA web site http://www.academyadmissions.com/admissions/the-application-process/nominations/
HONOR MILITARY SCHOOLS AND AIR FORCE RESERVE OFFICER TRAINING CORPS
There are twenty appointments total for all categories. Honor military schools are designated by the Department of the Army, Marine Corps and Navy to nominate Academy candidates annually from among their honor students. Each honor unit may nominate five students to compete for the vacancies. Students should apply to their Senior ROTC Instructor for the nomination.

Members of college and high school honor Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC and AFJROTC) units may also apply in this category. Five students from each detachment may be nominated to compete for the authorized vacancies. Students should apply for a nomination to their professor of aerospace studies or aerospace science instructor who will recommend nominees to the head of the institution.
.
4) All you can do is call. What is the worst that they can do, "Say no" Explain why you made the last minute change and your desire to attend USAFA. They may surprise you and say yes. Have you checked your senator's deadlines.

You will have a lot of work to get done in a short period of time. Especially those nomination applications.

Good luck. Apply even if your MOC says no. If USAFA wants you, they'll find a nominating source.

Academies love perseverance.

if the representative has a slate that isn't full, there is certainly a potential for them to add you to their slate. The congressional deadline is 1/31 for them to give their slates to USAFA. I know of someone who applied to the wrong congressman due to change in boundaries. He was able to interview on 1/30 and got a nomination the same day!

Good luck. Apply even if your MOC says no.
I like that approach. Write your essay about how you will not accept No when it comes to getting into USAFA. Write about your perseverance, along with a good story on why your application is late.
