Hello everyone!

I'm a high school junior in St. Louis, Missouri really wanting to go to the Naval Academy (I would be Class of 2022). Someone recently came to my school and gave information regarding the admission process. I have a few questions, so I thought I'd ask here. Thanks for helping me out in advance.

1) How hard is it to get a nomination, and can I get one from a different state? My family knows a senator in Kentucky that can give out nominations, but I know I would have to get one from Missouri. Would me knowing the senator in Kentucky help improve my chances of getting a nomination from a senator in Missouri? And how hard is it to get an appointment after getting a nomination from a member of Congress?

2) Is my GPA alright? I had a 3.9 unweighted GPA in my first two years of high school. My junior year unweighted GPA has dropped it some, so I'm expecting around a 3.75-3.85 unweighted GPA by the end of junior year. I have not taken the ACT yet, but I plan to get a baseline score on the one in December then study for the one is February.

3) How hard is the CFA? I'm a female. I haven't tried to do the BBall throw or shuttle run yet, but I am able to do the pushups and situps just fine. I can do 1 pull up, but it's not very good and can do the flexed arm hang for at least 10 seconds. I'm trying to work on my pullups. Would doing 1 pullup be better than maxing out on the flexed arm hang? My mile run is not very good; last time I did it (over a year ago), I got a 9:15. I swim on the high school team. I'm alright at swimming. I can swim sort of fast, but I know my swimming is not fast enough for a division 1 school. (sprinter, 50 free time is 28.7 and 100 free time is 1:03.5 for the other swimmers out there)

4) Is it okay if I'm a bit underweight? I've been trying to gain weight for a while now. I am currently 5'5" and 3/4 of an inch, but I only weigh 105 lbs. I saw the minimum for my height is 114-115 lbs. How can I gain the 10 lbs. or is it possible to get a waiver for this?

Thanks for helping me out here. I'm just very nervous about if I could get in or not.

Welcome to the SA forum! We are also in St. Louis. My daughter was a USNA candidate last year, but ended up at Virginia Military Institute with a Marine scholarship.

You will not be able to utilize your senator friend in Kentucky; only the MOC's where you reside may give you a nomination (so Anne Wagner, Roy Blunt and Claire McCaskill).

You are very fortunate to live in STL. There is a local group called St. Louis Military Officer Support Foundation. You are able to train with them for free - workouts/PT, firearms, combatives, etc. Here is the Facebook page:

Keath Hauser (who runs the SLMOSF) can help you get into a good routine and help with your weight issues.

Good luck!

Hi ctar17, I'm not much help to your 1st question but:

2. I applied with a 3.77 unweighted GPA and a 1280 SAT (640 math 640 reading) and I was just fine. However, I'm also a recruited athlete. I took the ACT but never submitted my scores to USNA.

3. I am an athlete, but I wouldn't say I'm extremely fit, but I managed the CFA. I didn't practice the BB throw or the shuttle run and just did it during my test. These were my scores:

Pull ups: I wasn't able to do a pull up at all and did the flexed arm hang for 12.3 seconds
Push ups: 45
Sit ups: 101
Mile: 7:38
BB Throw: 46 ft
Shuttle run: 9.8 seconds

I think that's everything. I also applied to USAFA and they said I needed to retake my CFA just to get my score to a 15 second arm hang. (However, I have committed to play my sport at USNA 2021 and they said my scores were fine) I'm not sure about how your times compare to those at USNA swimming, but I suggest emailing the coach no matter what; it can't hurt. I spoke to one of the swim coaches there when I was on my recruiting trip and he's a really nice guy! Also, since I was a recruited athlete, I'm not sure if they carefully looked at my cfa scores.

4. I heard on a different thread that you can probably get a waiver for this, however I'm not 100% sure and waivers vary per applicant (as everything does).

If you haven't already done so, read every page, link and drop down on USNA.edu Admissions. Take notes; build a timeline.

Browse the USNA forum here for threads on stats/chances, physical fitness, medical requirements, being triple qualified, etc. Read the stickies at the top of the Nominations forum. Scan the Acronyms stickie.

The Admissions process is just as much of a test of your perseverance, attention to detail and personal organization as anything else on the path to a SA appointment.

Good luck!

Thank you everyone for replying! I will look into contacting the swim coach. Also is my district very competitive? I live in MO's 2nd district (rep: Ann Wagner). I will be sure to update with any info I have

Thank you for showing me this! I really would like to improve my skills on a rifle. I have been duck hunting with my dad a few times, but with a shotgun. And I would really like to improve my pull up.

It's really more about getting you ready for a service academy/military service. Watch the videos on the Facebook page and you'll get a better idea.

But first....you will start with the PT training.
