VMI Acceptance

He did an overnight as a junior--so last November--and loved it. He is in at the Citadel (which he thinks is great although not as great as VMI) and I think he is not worried about getting into VMI. I think I am worried.

I am with you there...I definitely am more on edge during this process than DD is! The waiting is the worst :( congratulations to your DS on the Citadel. What academies did he apply to?

He applied to USMA, USNA, and USAFA. I think he is best suited for VMI--all of the physical, mental and moral preparation without so much of a math and science obligation for a bachelors in poli sci/international relations.

Congratulations Dancing Falcon and Teragram.
#3 is still waiting. It could be until April. (Although I was hoping with Eagle Scout and a 1250 SAT it wouldn't be this long...maybe he didn't write enough in the optional essay? Who knows.)
Congratulations again!

Thank you! I'm sure his letter will be coming soon. VMI may be waiting to request his 7th semester grades before making a final decision. I, too am applying to Service Academies (USAFA and USMA) so I understand the wait. Good luck to him!

My #2DS and hubby both graduated from VMI. #3DS waiting to hear from USNA and USAFA, but may still consider VMI. Wonderful experience for our family having a father and son from the same Senior Military College. The personalized academic attention was incredible. Good luck to all of you.

VMIwifeandmom...we didn't meet in the Scout Store off Braddock Rd...did we?

DD waiting on USMA and USNA also. She too is leaning away from Math/Science and towards Languages/Poli Sci. At this point Intelligence or JAG is ultimate goal so USMA first choice. I agree with dancing_falcon, my guess would be VMI is merely waiting to see how well your DS is doing this year :).

I was wondering where on the application portal you can see it say "completed". I cant seem to find it.

I was already cleared by DODMERB in August, however I have since gotten a tattoo (within Navy regulations). Who should I contact to relay this information? I contacted an admissions officer at VMI and she said she would add it to my file, but I didn't need to give any more information at this point. Is there a special form to fill out?

My DS just completed and submitted his application to VMI. He completed his application to Citadel in September and received his acceptance rather quickly.
Does anyone have any idea how long it usually takes to hear from admissions at VMI. He just decided to look into VMI recently (a little late in the process) and I would love him to visit to both schools. He's been to Citadel but I would like him to also experience VMI, if accepted, as well as an overnight visit at Citadel.

I'm sorry I do not know the info about VMI, but may I ask your DS's thoughts on the citadel. I am considering it myself and am just wondering

@Swag - glad to hear he's applying to VMI!!! When my DD applied last year she was offered an appointment to VMI surprisingly fast - within a couple weeks. I have heard of others that took longer though.

Here's a link to register for an Open House for an overnight visit. http://www.vmi.edu/admissions-and-aid/visit/open-house-registration/

My DD had been leaning towards Citadel from looking at the websites, but then we visited both schools for an overnight and the visits completely changed her mind - VMI was where she belonged. For her, she just "knew" when she visited.

Good luck!

My son really liked our visit to Citadel. We visited in April, he met with an admissions director, and we went on a tour led by a cadet. We also stayed and watched the afternoon Parade. It's a Charleston which is a plus for mom! Lol! I have paid the deposit and medical forms are bring sent today. However... We have not visited VMI so he has nothing to compare Citadel to besides USNA and a few of our state universities. If and when he's accepted I think he will need to visit both because I've read about how many kids knew which one was a good fit after visiting both.

My DS showed a portal completion date of October 27th and received his acceptance packet Monday to VMI. He did a visit and we toured and were extremely impressed. He was not sure at first because he has his heart set on USNA. He was considering a NROTC state school if the USNA does not work out, but has loved the Navy and military life and so we encouraged a visit and he fell in love with VMI. There were pieces I actually liked more than the USNA, although the USNA seems to be the golden ticket! Even with a NROTC scholarship, VMI is still pricey. Anyhow, we were all impressed and I know my DS will be very happy there, get an amazing education and have a great start to his Naval career! Go Navy!

@Swag. My guy heard back from the Citadel almost immediately. Unlike others on this thread, he is still waiting on his VMI decision notification--and he completed his packet in late October. While in Lexington for an ROTC interview, he did an admissions interview there on Monday but he started with an overnight in the fall of his junior year--and he also attended a VMI admissions outreach seminar near our home. He really likes VMI--I think it is a better fit for him than USNA (which is his reach school). I think the deadlines are the deadlines for a reason--so that through January is ok as the admissions officer said that they were not looking at anything other than early decision until January (maybe he was being polite?). Good luck and I hope you all get to go for a visit.

My son completed his VMI application in late November, early December 2014 and received his appointment in early January 2015. He was leaning towards Norwich and hadn't heard about VMI until he was told of a recruiting event. Went to that in November, applied after, and it became his first choice. Did the overnight in early February which solidified it. He is currently a 3rd and extremely happy with his choice.
