Hi, I am a high school junior. I have an SAT score of 1290, and my GPA is 3.9 and I am taking anatomy, physics, and pre-calc this year, then AP calculus next year and Chem 2, so my schedule is decently hard. Also I run cross country and track and this year hope to run within top 10-20 times in Indiana for the 1600 and 3200. If I do this, and send it to the coaches at West Point, could I become a recruited athlete? Also if I am will that help my chances of getting in, and by how much? Any advice is much appreciated! I love this country and want to serve it, hopefully my whole life, and this is the greatest way I can, and want to know if by my running, it will help me achieve my dream! Thank you.

Yes you could be a recruited athlete. If the track or cross country coach really really want you and you are minimally qualified they could have you admitted. Lots of ifs and a very long shot.

A pretty solid indication of your recruit status or Army's desire to recruit you is to see if your times score for them in the Patriot League. If not, probably not. If so, you have a chance.

None of us know your chances. You are talking in all hypothetical situations that may or may not happen. Sure if you score in the top 10-20 for the state it might help. It all depends on who else USMA is recruiting and how deep they already are in these areas. All you can do is reach out to the coaches, let them know you exist and apply. If they want you bad enough they will get in touch. On the athletic site there is a recruitment questionnaire. Fill it out and send it in. If you get jumps in your times let them know. Don't email them every time time there is a half second improvement in your mile. The beauty of sports like track and field and swimming is you can put in an hour of research into the current team and see what kinds of times they are posting. You know if you are in the ball park or not. Do your diligence and really understand where you stand in things before reaching out.

What are your times?

Realistically, you need:

1600: 4:30-4:35

3200: 9:30/9:40

This is based off of their milesplit account from the 2015 outdoor season.
