I had a principal nomination and my Academy application deadline was 1 November 2016.

From everything I've heard it varies. The academy will contact your senator or congressman to let them know so if they want to call you and let you know they can. Then the academy will update your online portal, which an email usually alerts you of this, and then they put the acceptance packet in the mail. This order can sometimes change however but this is how it's "supposed" to happen.

No BFEs from USAFA anymore. Everything is online. When and if you accept they send an appointment certificate to your ALO who is supposed to present it at some point. The change took affect with the class of 2018. It was a bummer for DD, her ALO lost her certificate so she never got one :(

Are the appointments recently received (Jan. 17) considered "early"? Does this mean that the appointee is considered to be highly desirable/qualified, or just rolling based?

Congrats on the appointment. I believe those getting appointments now are those that were principal nominees or were on a completed slate. Not all slates are complete yet so those (probably like my DS) are waiting for others to complete all of the requirements needed to submit a full application. So, we wait....

I know a person who is on my son's slate (matter of fact 2 of them) who still has yet to complete the CFA.

Our DS had a Nov 1 deadline. Like you, we continue with the waiting game. It's been tough....
