USAFA Class of 2021 Appointments

Dear Son, Dear Daughter. There is an acronym list at the top of this page.
Rick - thanks for the quick reply, found the page you referred to! By the way, - just was wondering what you thought about my son's chances for appointment? He rec'd his nomination just before Christmas - he was 30 ACT, 4.7 GPA (4.0 unweighted), Ranked #4 out of 315, Student body president, NHS, Boy's State, Varsity Soccer 4 years, and attended the Junior Seminar in July 2016... Thoughts?

That's the $1,000,000.00 question. Looking at your DS's stats, he's competitive. But there is so much more to it and there are many candidates with similar stats. There are some a bit lower, and some with higher stats. Only the respective SA Admissions know the secret scoring formula on who gets an appointment and who doesn't. A lot also comes down to who is on your DS's slate. I do wish you the very best. But, always have a Plan B and C just in case. Welcome to the waiting game :)

RickD hits the nail on the head. Your DS is competitive but there is no way to know who else is on the slate. He could be competing against a National Merit Scholar with a perfect SAT score, ranked #1 out of 1000, all state in two sports, captain of his football team, leadership positions in multiple other activities or someone who has a 27 ACT, 3.6 GPA, ranked in the top 10% of their class, varsity letter winner and member of a few clubs and sports. While both of these individuals are qualified your DD would not get the appointment against candidate one and would most likely be selected over the second. Each slate only gets one appointment. Only worry about what you can control and always have Plan B and C. We are going through this a second time this year with DD as she got caught in the principal nom slate last year. The waiting is the hardest part.

Again - thank you - can elaborate on what a "slate" is ? Thanks!

Each MOC typically gets one slot each year and he submits his "slate" of up to ten nominees for that on spot. Highest ranked candidate gets the offer of appointment. The MOC may have two openings this year and he would have two "slates". They could be the same 10 individuals on both, 20 separate or anywhere in between but you only compete against the individuals from your "slate". After all "slates" are resolved, the class is completed from the National Waiting List where everyone goes if they do not win their slate.

There are always a few exceptions but generally this is how it works.

Thank you very much for the information sir!

I received my appointment to USAFA on January 12, 2017! Got my nomination on December 24, 2016 from Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers - WA. Finished my application on December 16, 2016. Recruited as a blue-chipped athlete for the rifle team.

My daughter just found out that all three Legislative (2 Senators and 1 Congressman) nominated her for the Air Force Academy. Also her Liaison officer told her yesterday that he sent a very powerful letter of recommendation for her. With 3 nominations does that make her chances better for getting in where the AFA will most likely give her an appointment?

Sherrie, scroll up and read my comments on nominations and slates. Being on three slates increases her chances because she will compete three times but she has to be the top candidate in one of those competitions.
