I think you should have taken the ECP and not turned it down. Take what ever is offered and work with it.

I don't agree. ECP isn't for everyone. There are options out there even if not awarded a national scholarship. At my daughter's selective (not highly selective, but moderately) university, all freshman cadets that came in without a scholarship were awarded one by the end of 1st semester for next year. Half of the 3 year cadets were upgraded to 3.5 year. If you want to go to a four year university, or if an ECP doesn't align with academic or career goals, then I would never recommend someone taking it.Many state's offer free community college tuition as it is. @junlee58 please don't second guess your choice, and good luck 3rd board. Stay in contact with your schools, campus based scholarships are always an option too. Good luck.

I don't agree with this direction. The ECP initial schools (JMC's) are quite possibly not a fit academically or socially for university bound students seeking a commission. Additionally, having to transfer schools can be painful - other posters identified difficulty academically switching from the 2 year school to a 4 year school. AD options for ECP commissionees are limited.

Complete ROTC at a school that fits you academically and socially.

Also turned down the ECP and did not receive an offer. I am still wondering if anyone who turned down ECP received an offer?

If offered the JMC 2YR scholarship on the first board, you will not get an offer on the 2nd Board. There is a chance you may get an offer after the third board. Based on historical data the board makes a projection on what the 3 and 4 year scholarship cutoff scores will be. They then make 2YR offers to those projected to be just below the cut line.

You should take the 2YR scholarship if you want to go to a Junior Military College and if you prefer to commission into the Reserves/Guard.

Mohawk - Cadet Command should fix their review process for applicants that decline the ECP to be considered by the 2nd board. Please forward this post to the decision maker at CC or provide the CC contact information for input. Some applicants offered the ECP options did not select that option for consideration.

If an applicant does not identify themselves as 'interested' or 'considering' a JMC or ECP commission they should not be excluded by the 2nd board review and scholarship eligibility from that board. This is especially true if the applicant did not include any JMC/ECP school in their choice of schools.

If the applicant is above the 'cut line' for a scholarship on the 2nd board and an ROTC Bn 'accepts' them they too should be offered a scholarship by the 2nd board and not be forced to the 3rd board for consideration.

Please PM me if you would like to discuss this further. I don't have a 'dog in this fight' but the ECP offers this year appear to have been poorly handled by CC and some of the JMC's (Wentworth). I do not have an applicant this year, nor a child in ROTC currently, but I do assist local families with 'cultural hesitation' to enlist/commission in the military.

@AROTC Parent Just to clarify, as I did not provide enough info earlier. ECP selectees are not excluded from the 2nd board. They will not get an offer from the 2nd Board, because their OML score is below the cutoff score that is used for the second board, and below the anticipated cutoff score for the 3rd board. That is why they are offered a 2YR scholarship.

There were a lot of scholarship offers for ECP as USACC was trying to offer more scholarships to students that are not likely to earn a 3 or 4yr but are interested in ROTC. They even offered it to those not interested in ECP.

Regardless of your interest in ECP, you will only get offered a 3 or 4 year scholarship if you make the requisite cutlines.

I thought ROTC/ECP was exclusively for National Guard and/or reserves, i.e. zero chance for active duty. Am I wrong?

if I read this correctly, those who get ECP won't receive any offers. if that is the case, they should have been more clearly as the letter says, if you decline, you will still be boarded. I called the ECP POC and explained to me that they select the 1st 100 who didn't make it on the first board.

So I won the ECP at the first board, as long as I was in the 1st 100 who didn't win are you saying I will win a scholarship at the next board?

Not necessarily. Once boarded you receive an OML score and placed on the scholarship OML. When all the boards are complete, approx the top 1000 get a 4YR offer, and the second 1000 get a 3YR offer. Those getting an ECP offer are projected to be just out of the top 2000. However, that may not be reality and you luck out ending up being in the top two thousand and get another offer.

My DD was awarded the option of a 2 yrs ECP at Georgia Military College or 3 yrs AROTC scholarship at UCF or USF. These were her top 3 choices. Is their any hope, at this point, if it becoming a 4 yrs AROTC scholarship?? She is now speaking with Admissions at The Citadel and just put in an application, which the Director of Admissions has already told her based on her scores she is in, if she wants it, and they will help her transfer it to them. My concern is the cost...and yes, they have given her some options, but would really like to know if she could still get the 4 yrs scholarship...

If she got 3 year offers she has three year offers. There won't be any more offers coming from subsequent boards. That being said the two year ECP is actually a 4 year, since the second two years are covered by Ike Skelton, but my opinion is that even then ECP is not worth it (just my opinion).

Don't look at sticker price. Until you've seen the offered financial aid you don't know exactly what it will cost you for the first year.

DS was awarded 3 yr AROTC from 2nd board. He was accepted to VaTech yesterday. VT was his #1 school, but not originally -only after he changed the order of schools of intent on his portal in January. DS was awarded the scholarship to 3 other schools on his list. We are not residents of VA, so OOS tuition at VT is cost prohibitive at $36k+. I spoke to the VT AROTC PMS yesterday who said transferring the scholarship to VT should not be a problem. Is there a way for Cadet Command to let DS know where he falls relative to the top 1,000 in order to gauge the odds of an upgrade to a 4 yr after the 3rd board concludes?

Cadet Command won't tell you where you fall on the OML. They will let you know if you get an upgrade in APR. Upgrades are rare, so I would not expect one to come.

Most scholarship upgrades come after the cadet has started ROTC with their chosen battalion. If you look through this site you will see that there have been cadets that once they start ROTC they are offered an upgrade to a 4 year, some complete their first semester and are upgraded to a 3.5 year scholarship.

Realize that this does not happen to all cadets and it will depend on whether the battalion has any slots available for upgrades. Upgrades, when offered, are given to those cadets that start out very well, high APFT and a good GPA and perform well and the cadre are confident they will stay with the program.

If a cadet has a 3 year and wants the chance to upgrade then they need to hit the ground running, hard, so they can take advantage of any opportunities that come up.

The ROOs that have the experience with all this give the best advice, I agree with them that if you have a 3 year in hand look at making that option work over the ECP if your desire is to serve Active Duty when you commission.
