Recommendation Letters

So the academy requires 3 teachers evaluations from math, science, and English teachers, so any additional letters of rec would be filled out by different teachers I would assume?

You're correct. Other teachers, or someone else that knows you well enough to write a reflection on the type of person you are.

My DS completed his application to USAFA. Here receives both Presidential and Congressional nominations. In the application, he included 3 recommendation letters which is optional. Today, he gets a very nice letter of recommendation from his high school band director, who has been one of the mentors to DS since middle school. Can the band director fax this LOR to USAFA admission even though USAFA specifically says " ..up to, no more than three, LOR."

Admissions will only consider three LOR's. It probably would be in your DS's best interest not to submit more than the three letters as the portal states "DO NOT send in more than three letters, we will only consider three." However, I did have luck last year having my admissions counselor remove one of my LOR's from my portal so I could submit a better one. If you can single out one that you feel is less beneficial than the one you are about to submit, it's worth the shot.

My DS 2020 was told by his ALO that "optional" is not really optional. It is to test your willingness to go the extra mile on you application. Do you best to get 3 letters of recommendation from your principal, teachers, coaches, or pastors. The Academy already can see if your are academically and physically fit but they want to know about you as a person through the words of those who know you personally. Never leave an opportunity to set yourself apart from the other applicants on the table. You want to give yourself every advantage you can get and not wonder down the road "what if" I would have turned in those recommendations in case you do not earn an appointment.
