I was accepted to the Citadel and am very interested. I was curious if anyone could comment on the lifestyle of knob year and how to physically prepare for the school itself.

Sidenote: I am very aware of the strict and tough atmosphere at the Citadel, I can handle being yelled at and the restrictions. I know what I'd be getting myself into, I was just curious if anyone had some insight.

Dear DST. Congrats on being accepted - you have a lot to think about as you decide on a college. As an accepted HS student, you are eligible to spend a weekend at the college with a 4th Class cadet to see and experience what it is like to be a Knob. You will also have the opportunity to talk to faculty and ROTC staff. If you have not done this - please try to get scheduled. If you cannot do this, call the Admissions Office and see if they can connect you to a current cadet to get his/her first hand experience and answers to your questions. A lot of information on The Citadel Knob year and particularly the academic Ethics & Moral academic classes, physical fitness requirements Leadership Development Model applicable to 4th Class members of the Corps of Cadets can be found on the college web site. As to the 4th Class System see:
http://www.citadel.edu/root/assistant-commandant-fourthclass-system
Understand that committing to The Citadel is not just about the first year. Becoming a member of the 174 year old South Carolina Corps of Cadets is a 4 year experience in both learning traditions and meeting challenges. This is in addition to your academic major, ROTC training obligations, and physical fitness requirements. This is explained at:
http://www.citadel.edu/root/assistant-commandant-leadership-development-program
And a good discussion of the physical fitness requirements for all four classes is provided at:
http://www.citadel.edu/root/admissions-physical-fitness
Best of luck to you.

I was accepted back in September (actually, the day before my pre-knob overnight visit) and I will be attending. I highly recommend you go for a pre-knob overnight visit, it is a great experience and will either make you go "Ohhh yes, I want to come here" or "Ohhh no, this doesn't seem like a good fit for me". For me, it made my motivation to attend even stronger. Best of luck to you, and perhaps I'll see you in August :)

said by every SMC recruit ever, including those that drop out
Lol. My DD has a pre-know on March 2nd. She has been accepted and is looking forward to this as her Plan B...plan A is still USMS.

My DS will also be attending on 3/2 as well. From what I understand they have informational sessions for parents. Does anyone have information on this?

Yes, from what my parents told me from my pre-knob back in September, they take the parents to a separate room for a parent information session. My parents said they really enjoyed it and learned a lot about the school, and it made them very excited for me to attend this coming fall!

Thank you! Perhaps you'll be meeting my DS this fall. How did you enjoy your Pre-knob?

I had a great time. I had been to the school for an initial tour and another time for an AROTC interview, so that was my 3rd time going. I'm very excited to attend, and I hope to meet your DS! Just trying to figure out scholarships and all of that fun stuff currently... :) best of luck to y'all.

Same situation here. We visited last April for an admissions tour and interview. Since then, he has applied for an NROTC MO Scholarship. He's hoping to have news in the next few weeks. Out of state tuition is very steep so we're praying for that scholarship. He has Citadel listed as his #1.

Congrats to all - the college web site is maybe not the easiest to find what you are looking for, but a lot of information is on the web site - if you take the time to look. Also, when you find a page that interests you. Go to the top of the page and put in search terms in the search bar. This often takes you to a Google Search that finds many pages of responses on point. For example - on the Pre-Knob Visit page: I found the following on the college web site:
Pre-Knob Overnight Visits. The Pre-Knob Program is a rare opportunity for a non-cadet to observe the cadet lifestyle firsthand. In addition to receiving a Knob host, Pre-Knobs spend the
"High School students who have been accepted to The Citadel spend a night in the barracks, eat in the Mess Hall, and attend classes. Parents also receive a special orientation program geared specifically toward future knob parents (information on academics, financial aid, cadet lifestyle, etc.)."
But - then using the search engine, I found the following:

I am the exact same. It is my #1, I am going regardless I think...
I'm hoping for a 3yr AROTC national from this last board, and my backup is hopefully a Minuteman Reserves scholarship. Praying it all works out!
