Still in the game

Congrats!! When did he complete his scholarship app?

Hi! So his application process last year was: completed USNA application early September; NROTC- the day it was due:rolleyes:
He was completely set on USNA and I think he did not want to consider AT ALL, the possibility that he would not get in. It is not that NROTC was not an option- it was just not his first choice. To all applicants- and I am sure that this has been said by others!! I would recommend that if the ultimate goal is NAVY- cover all your bases. I think its possible that his late application to NROTC last year made him less competitive for that option, and left him starting in the college program where he was enrolled- without a guarantee of commission, and then having to pursue some other option to get there (maybe OCS after enlistment?).

This year, after recovering from the TWE (took about a six weeks :frown:) he approached the recruiter in late May, just prior to HS graduation and already committed to college. The recruiter's advice was to get the NROTC application in as soon as the site opened. DS probably submitted it within 2-3 weeks of that so maybe July 1. USNA application was completed for this year as well, late August once his class schedule for college was available. So, that is it. Received scholarship notice yesterday!!

I'm reapplying to USNA as a college freshman and today it struck me, why not apply to USCGA too? I looked at the USCGA website and tried to find similarities/differences with USNA. usna1985, could you or LITS maybe talk about some of the similarities/differences with USCGA, USNA and maybe even USNA? My end goal would be to be a ship's officer or naval aviator.

You should definitely check out USMMA. My son did not have it on his radar at all but after visiting, it became a very viable option. His goal was to be an officer in the US Navy and USMMA will provide that path. If you are interested in being a ships officer, you will certainly get the best training for that there. And, regarding naval aviator….Blue Angel #3 is a USMMA grad!..so that is not out of the question either. Let me know if you have any questions. It is worth looking at for sure.

It is not too late to apply to USMMA and ask for the Nom, even if you've already been interviewed. It is not uncommon for USMMA to be the afterthought and then become the best choice.

This thread is over a year old :)

Our DD is a member of Greystone Prep at Schreiner U. in Texas and also working hard. We totally believe she is in the right place. She is definitely re applying to USNA for the class of 2019. Good luck to those who have restarted the "game" and those who've decided to take a different but equally rewarding path to commissioning. As parents we are thankful for all these young men and women who want to serve and protect our nation!
How did Greystone experience work out for her? I am considering that too.

It is better to start a new thread with your question instead of adding to something started in 2014. Most of those participants are long gone and with 113 pages of comments, it is difficult to know which specific topic is being discussed.

This is just a helpful post and is exactly where my DS is. No TWE yet, but given that tomorrow is March 1, I am thinking through all the options that would be available to my DS. He also filed his NROTC application on the last day because didn't want to entertain the possibility of not getting into USNA... As the result, we still haven't heard back from NROTC and he hasn't been yet to the second interview.. So my DS is in the exact same position as your DS 2 years ago...
