Class of 2021 USNA Appointment Thread

FINALLY!!!!!!!!!! Last year he turned down a USAFA appointment, was denied USNA and accepted a NROTC because he stayed true to his heart and his passions. Hardest thing to do was turn down an appointment to stay true! Today I am proud to say my son, who like all worked his tail off was appointed. He couldn't even get through his tears and my tears on the phone to tell me. I am so proud of him! So happy he finally landed this! Was a HUGE journey in the making of 11 years as a single parent focused on his high goals daily. Greatest moment of my life!

These are the moments. CONGRATULATIONS! My daughter has a very similar journey. She was offered an appointment to USAFA last week. We are waiting on Navy which is her first choice. All the best to you son. Naptowwn (Annapolis) is an amazing place and he is gonna love it.

My DD really wants Navy. She was appointed USAFA and very very honored and happy to attend if Navy does not work out. She has applied to USCGA as well and will consider attending should she get in.
To answer your question, it is Navy, AF and CG for her. My fingers are getting numb from being crossed so long and the prayer book is getting worn out. Good luck to your DD and here is hoping they will be 2021 classmates.

Thank you but he too was rejected from STEM both times in HS. He attended two visits at the academy and still was denied. He just needed that lil edge and was able to get it this past year while attending college and NROTC. He also achieved a high GPA at a very tough college on 22 credits. This kid is my unsung hero! He never gave up the ship LITERALLY!

Highly doubt it. It takes awhile for changes like to get worked out. No budgets have been approved yet. Even if it eventually increases numbers it won't be much.

"More defense" has to go through a long budget process resulting in defense spending bills, authorizations and appropriations. The money comes in several different "flavors," such as manpower (bodies, retirement benefits, healthcare, etc.), installations, equipment, consumables (fuel), repair, acquisition of new "stuff," etc. The Service Chiefs will lobby for their share of the pie for shopping lists, which are prioritized based on strategy documents. There are rules about not using one flavor of appropriated money for another flavor of expenditure. Nothing will translate into an overnight ramp-up of personnel. It could be more flying hours (avgas) for the aviation training and operational squadrons. It could be building two more ships in a class of destroyers that had been suspended for budget shortages.

Additional officers will come from where they always have, ROTC and OTS/OCS programs. The DOD Service Academies, if I were to go look back over the years to the 600-ship Navy of the Reagan era and comparable Army and AF sizes, still delivered in a rough range of 900~1200 (back of the envelope) new officers per annum. Part of this is capacity.

The trend in Navy ships has been toward more automation, requiring fewer officer and enlisted.

All officers of the grade of Major/Lieutenant Commander and above get introduced to the sheer joy of the PPBS/PPBE/Name of the Day process in staff officer tours. Many of us who post here on SAF have enjoyed that sheer joy. It can be rewarding to get a program funded (or re-funded), winning a battle within the Service over another competing staff element. It's the complex underpinning of an almost overwhelmingly massive system.

A MOC can only have 5 Mids or Cadets charged to them. There can be dozens of kids from one area at a SA, but at one time only 5 can be at a SA that have been charged to him. Take an area like Northen VA or San Diego. You could have dozens of kids spread out over 4 classes at a USNA. Some wil be charged to the respective congressman or congresswoman. Others could be a variety of noms like Presidential, ROTC, come off the NWL, VP, service connected.
