Hi all! Last night I received an email from admissions at USNA providing me the opportunity to attend a CVW this Spring. I've only heard a bit about it, so I looked at the website and had a few unanswered questions that I thought this forum could possibly answer:

(1) USNA states that this opportunity is by invitation. I've only applied to NASS, so can I infer anything about the status/competitiveness of my application?

(2) I have not heard anything about my acceptance/rejection to NASS. If I was accepted into NASS, I would probably have to choose between the two. Is NASS or CVW more beneficial to me? Should I accept the offer that's in my hands while I have it?

(3) If I reject the CVW now, will I be able to request one next year or would I be shooting myself in the foot in terms of visiting USNA?

Thanks!

I would take the CVW- it gives more insight since you stay with a plebe during the visit. Also- you've been "accepted" for it, what happens if you don't get into NASS and don't take this opportunity. I have no clue about getting another CVW at a later time but I'm sure that it's possible. NASS is more of a recruiting activity where you do things, CVW is more of a seeing. Not getting into NASS is not a penalty against you for your application as it is super competitive and they have to fill certain attendance requirements.

Take the CVW I went in November and I got a real look at life at the academy! It was during six week exams as well. It answered most of my questions that I could possibly asked. Got to talk to professors as well that teach the plebes. My mom also went to the parents briefing as well and she found it very useful. I also got to do the Saturday morning workout with 1st company, as well as attend the spring football game against Army.

A CVW and attendance at NASS do not add any points to your admission chances. I wouldn't infer anything about it except it's an opportunity to see USNA from the inside. CVW opportunities are usually given to those they see as competitive candidates. Don't read into that. They are simply looking at a very small set of data at this point with self reported test scores and GPA.

NASS is a fun week where you can meet other like minded kids from across the country. You get small snippets of what USNA is like. It's in the summer so USNA isn't in full academic year swing. Your interactions are with a hand full of newly minted 3/C and a very few 1/C. The 3/C views are mostly of Plebe Year as that is what they know. The biggest piece it allows you to complete the CFA in a competitive environment, live in Bancroft and see USNA from the inside.

CVW is a chance to see USNA during the academic year. It's what life will be like for 4 years. You get to sit in class, talk to Mids of all years, see it from the inside. It is a true representation of what being a Mid is like. You can really build a picture and envision yourself in the actual environment.

I would accept the CVW. You can always request to move it if you run into a conflict or can't attend. This will allow you sometime to find out if you got accepted to NASS. If you financially can only do 1, the CVW is a better view of USNA, but NASS has its advantages too.

I decided to take the CVW offer after talking with my parents. Thanks everyone for the help!

Wow, I'm so glad I joined this forum. I got one of those too and I was very confused because I thought the CVWs were just for seniors, but I signed up anyway. I didn't get any kind of confirmation after signing up, though. It was just on a Google sign-up sheet. Was it the same way for you?

It was the same way for me. Got an email in September saying I was invited. Signed up didn't hear until about a week before confirming my attendance.

I will put this out their. I went to a CVW last year as a Junior it was a great experience and then I got NASS. I didn't meet anyone else at NASS that had done both but I am sure their were people. Fast Forward to this year. I got my Appointment in February and wanted to do another CVW to help me decide between the Academies. I had to jump though hoops and get special permission to do another CVW.

Same for me! Did you fly there? My family is worried about scheduling our flight before receiving the confirmation, but the CVW is only 2 1/2 weeks out.

I flew, my parents schedule like a week before. I wouldn't stress now. When there was a week left and you heard nothing maybe email the person in charge.

I recommend be proactive and email/call on Monday before the snow storm hit Monday night into Tuesday. Right now it looks a delay or closing the office on Tues is likely.

Ditto - could be early release Monday afternoon and essential staff only on Tuesday, worst case. Forecasters around here seem to be off +- a foot, and they're out of practice this winter.

I second that, and there are no Mids around to help clearing the streets outside because they are on spring break!

I ended up receiving my confirmation early this morning. They probably wanted to get them out before the storm hits.

Latest radio WX - 1-3 inches for Anne Arundel County, Annapolis area. That means it could be nothing but sloppy sleet or a fat 10". They were waffling over the dividing line.

CVWs used to be for seniors only. That changed a few years ago. The fall is Seniors traditionally with a few juniors. The spring is juniors with a few seniors who have appointments and are trying to make a decision. The juniors in the spring are those who have applied for Summer Seminar with self reported stats that could be competitive candidates.

Yeah, this one is tricky, as Nor'easters often are. The difference between one side of "the line" and the other has been the difference between us being under a foot of snow and just sweeping off the front stoop.
