Finally Got the E-mail

That was a smart move if you didn't think of any plan B&C, I will do the same.

I would hold your horses. You must do research. Enlistment isn't for everyone.
It will suck at times and it can be demanding.
As I'm typing this I've been on watch for 3 hours already, with 2 to go.
For example, I worked today from 0700-1630, then had a drill at 1830-1930, then watch from 0100-0600, followed by another workday.
That is what sea duty can be. It is much worse if you're an engineer (paging BTCS). If you're not ready to work your butt off and not complain, welcome aboard.
Granted, you could be in drydock or on shore duty, but it's all in the dice.

Also, I would presue a normal college via out of pocket w/ROTC. You could enlist, hate it, and wish you went to school.

Feel free to hit me up with any questions. I've had a harder time than most with my Enlisted experience up to this point, where it has gotten better.

(I apologize for any spelling errors, I'm on my phone and have been up all night).

Hi everyone, so sorry to hear about all the TWEs today. Were you notified by email that your portal updated or was the notification only in your portal? Just curious. Thanks!

@Vitalzt and others: All very true. But many career fields are highly technical and there is a strong market in the civilian world for them. Do your research and/or take the ASVAB to see what you qualify. Not all jobs are created equal. Best of luck!

My heart hurts for these kids and families. I kept thinking we were weird because we started preparing now, but have come to find out it's the norm to get ready in 9th grade. To put 3 or 4 years into a journey and have it end up not the way you want, that is something that worries me a lot when my daughter first said she wanted to pursue the academy. All you can do is try again or go all in for a plan B.

DS received his TWE around this time 2 years ago. He was really sad and disappointed. Plan B was Norwich University, NROTC. He ended up deciding to major in Civil Engineering so he decided to leave NROTC this summer for AROTC because he believes he will have more opportunities to branch in engineering. He has grown so much through the last 2 years, it is amazing to me. He is now contracted and on a full scholarship for the rest of college. Loves where he is and what he is doing. He has worked very hard to get where he is. Good luck to everyone who will now need to move on to plan B. I feel like my DS is exactly where he is meant to be.

I received my TWE this morning and was 3Qed. My goal as always been to serve our country as an Active Duty Naval Officer. I'm looking at my plan B options now and could use some advice. I haven't heard back on my NROTC scholarships but was accepted to all my schools for mechanical engineering. It seems time is running short on further NROTC scholarship boards. I have received an appointment to the USMMA and I think it will come down to accepting my appointment at the USMMA or accepting an offer at one of my colleges and joining NROTC as a College Option. No matter what choice, I know that studying and training hard is key. I'm just not sure what path to take for someone striving for a Navy Commission.

My DD is a plebe at USMMA and loves it! She applied to USNA, got wait listed, then turned down. She also got an NROTC scholarship to George Washington Univ, but decided on USMMA. She couldn't be happier. I'm a USNA grad and I think she's exactly where she needs to be. USNA career options are limited to Navy or Marines, but USMMA options are many. One can take a commission in the Naval Reserve and sail on the license (deck or engine) making big bucks right out of school, OR you can commission into any branch or NOAA. My DD really likes that she has options. If you PM me, I can give you her contact info if you want to reach out to someone at USMMA.

Dear members of the TWE club:

Look at yourself in the mirror (parents, look at your DS or DD) and say out loud: "This too will pass. This temporary--and it is temporary--setback will not define me. I have a lot of God-given potential and it is up to me to develop it. No institution and no person will dissuade me from finding my path in life and reaching my potential. I will move on from this disappointment and I will succeed in the next chapter of my education. Let's do this!"

One year ago, WP had the audacity to post a QNS (Qualified Not Selected) letter on DS2's portal. WP's timing was horrible. We were on a family vacation. Thanks WP.

Fast forward one year, DS2 has grown so much. He is a different person today than he was a year ago. DS2 reapplied to WP and applied to Navy. No TWE showed up in his Navy portal today (but he remains medically disqualified). That said, DS2 knows that he will have an amazing future regardless of whether WP or Navy offer an appointment to him. You see, in the past twelve months DS2 has come to realize there are so many amazing opportunities out there, and it is up to him to continue to pursue his goals and not let disappointment negatively impact his self worth.

Allow yourself one day to mourn the fact that you will not be a member of the USNA class of 2021 and then move on. Show Navy admissions that they made a YUGE mistake. Continue to be the very best you can be. Embrace your plan b, c, d, or . . and succeed.

If you want to reapply, prepare a plan to improve your application--and execute on that plan. If you want to serve our country as a Navy officer, then do it. Today's TWE does not change that plan; rather, you might have to take a different path to achieve that goal. If you want to be a doctor, lawyer, engineer, or titan of business, today's TWE did not end that dream. Most of the best doctors, lawyers, engineers, and CEOs are not USNA graduates. Sure, USNA has impressive graduates who are highly respected among their peers in those professions, but USNA does not have a lock on the brightest and best club. We like YOUR potential and expect you to work hard. You can do this.

Continue to make us all proud of you.

Can BGOs give any guidance on why a student was not offered an appointment? Do they have access to that info?

BGOs are not informed on reasons for rejection or acceptance to USNA. We have no way of knowing what goes on in the selection process, but we see hundreds of highly qualified applicants turned down year after year. Remember, 18,000 apply, about 6,000 are qualified applicants, then that number gets whittled down to about 3,000 with nominations. Of that number, only 1175 get in. Of the 1175 that get in, about 250 are from NAPS and another 50 from foundation schools, leaving only about 875 spots. Getting in is like threading a needle. If there were BGOs that could figure out the process and guarantee successful admission, they'd be rich.

On another note, BGOs are not informed ahead of time regarding the status of their candidates. Yes, we have access to the status of our candidates, but often times the candidate finds out their status before the BGO has an updated system. Plus, our guidance from Admissions is that we are not allowed to inform the candidate of the candidates status even if we did know.

Best of luck to all of those turned down for admission. Keep striving and know that you'll end up where you're supposed to be.

Regards,
Steve Rakow

Thank you so much for your detailed explanation.

To all who received a TWE. Whether you will reapply or stay with your plan B be the best I can be at whatever you're doing. I decided to ask an Air Force Colonel I work under what's the best advice you could give someone who wants to have a successful career as a military officer and he said to do your absolute best at the job you are given. Sometimes you won't like the job but you have to push through it to be successful. So I want to tell you guys to give it your all on your plan B,C all the way through Z if you have to. To those reapplying I hope to see you on the 2022 appointment thread next year. Just my thoughts

Were most of these for people that were medically DQ'ed and/or w/o noms?

Son had been 3Qed at USMA, was on a slate that had a principal nom accept.

We were in this situation last year. DD was ranked higher on the slate than the principal. We mourned for a few weeks then she moved on. Took her ROTC scholarship of to college, had a blast and did well. Decided to re-apply and received her appointment to USMA in early February this year.

My best advice is to mourn for a few days and then focus on Plan B. Most of these wonderful kids have a Plan B that would make most others jealous. Go and enjoy your freshman year of college and keep doing the great things you did in High School. If you keep doing well, the world provides unlimited opportunities.

DD got her email as well. Still waiting for West Point, but her Plan B is still in full force as Delayed Entry Navy Enlisted. So if USMA says no, the Navy still gets her on August 2nd and she is reapplying and trying to come in from the fleet.

That is a total different path to serve, to say the least. May I ask what rating has she selected? And how did she pick it?
