Very frustrated

How am I self centered?

I would not use the word self-centered. Instead, I would happily use the word entitled. You feel as though USMA owes you something. Guess what? They owe you NOTHING. Were you forced to apply to West Point? Is there some national requirement that all college applicants must submit an application? No. You chose to apply and reapply. It is well documented that candidates can be offered appointments up until R-Day. I had a classmate receive a phone call from Admissions 4 days before R-Day. Notification deadlines are estimates to give the Admissions offices rough timelines to work in.

I've read all of your replies so far in this thread and none of them have shown any kind of willingness to broaden your horizons and look at things in the big picture. All I've read are your "woe is me" posts about it's not fair, that you deserve more than this and that you're somehow better then all of the others still out there waiting.

You know what's frustrating? Seeing men, women and children so desperate to escape a life of oppression and horror that they make "boats" out of foam, tarps and netting to try and sail 90 miles north without a compass, knowing that you have to send them back. You know what's not fair? A London policeman being taken away from his loved ones because he ran towards danger to help those threatened by a radical with a truck and a knife. You know what's upsetting? A 14 year old girl being raped by two teenage boys who not only assaulted her but filmed the event. Perspective.

You got a 31 ACT? Congratulations, you clearly demonstrated academic abilities. But maybe that candidate who failed their CFA the first time showed something more. Maybe their essays or recommendations or interview showed them to be of a high moral character. Perhaps you should focus less on what you've accomplished and what you feel is owed to you and more on comprehending that you do not have all of the information concerning other applicants and that your opinions are simply opinions, not facts.

West Point can train someone to be fit and teach someone the knowledge they need to have. What they cannot do is teach someone the character and values necessary to be a competent and focused leader worthy enough to lead soldiers. I don't know you and so I will not make a complete judgment of you but I will say that, from what you've shown here, you have some growing up to do. Several people here have attempted to give you advice on routes to take and perspectives to look at. I suggest you go back and take the time to not only read but understand what they've said.

I hear this all the time and I want to be an officer in a military branch. I really want to go to an academy because I like the smaller class sizes and the fact that professors will actually know my name. In my own personal opinion I do not like ROTC because it is not as intense as an academy and it is harder to get the branch I want out of college. West Point prepares people best so yes I want to be an officer but I want to do it through an academy

You should re-read this statement. This is sort of the definition of self-centered or entitled. There is nothing assured about branches or class sizes or duty stations or anything for that matter as you move through the academy. You will be racked and stacked against your peers at every step in the process at the academy and later as you serve.

You are not in a bad spot but not winning your slate even with the college boost and not being competitive off the NWL shows tells me that your packet is not as strong as you think.

Decide how you want to serve and then chase that goal. If West Point is really your dream, then the AOG scholarship is the golden ticket. If another year of waiting is to much for you, then do not accept it.

Here's my two cents: Move on and accept the USCGA appointment. You'll be happier.

If you're frustrated now, how will you feel if you turn down the USCGA appointment and, for some reason, you don't get into USMA after participating in the AOG WPPS program?

The reason why I am frustrated is because I have not even been offered civil prep yet. I feel like he is just leading me along. I would really prefer to just be told something so I can move on. He keeps telling me things like I have a shot and it's not over yet. @Alaskan by other reasons I mean that people are getting in with lower scores but have a certain quality that I don't have. I would be happy at USCGA, but would be very angry with myself if I accepted the appointment then heard from West Point that I got in. I wish admissions wouldn't lead people on this long
What a poor, arrogant, and terrible attitude you have, IMHO. I've been watching this process for 6 years now and have found that asking candidates they think are very qualified, but they may not be able to take this year (for whatever reason), about civil prep is fairly standard procedure. There is no benefit to your RC to lead you along. Do you think he gets paid according to whether he can string you along or not? What possible motivation could he have? The only person who is putting you through the wringer here, is you. I will also add that if your attitude on the phone with your RC is anything like this, I doubt very much you'll be getting a civil prep offer. You need to express some interest for that.

Livestrong, did you get an LOA? If you did not get an LoA when you completed your application early, then perhaps you are not judged to be as substantial a candidate as you would like to be judged.
No one is holding up your appointment.
The kids who are pushed to finish the package have something that intrigues the RC.
You should assume that everyone wants to go.
Also, different colleges and universities have different deadlines that work for them.
Do not pull the others down. No one has your appointment and no one is making you wait.
Yes they are because if they decline I get in. But the system is messed up because RC's and the admissions board get obsessed with the wrong things
But it's not YOUR appointment. It's THEIR appointment. They earned it, you did not. They are entitled to do whatever they want with it including holding on to it until the very last minute prior to making a final decision.

Im not sure if someone has said this later on in the thread yet, but if that situation did happen you can always turn down coast guard after you accept and then accept west point. One of my friends got into usna (but she really wanted usafa) but it was getting to the end so she accepted navy then in late may she got into usafa and went there instead.

Maybe I am not allowed to say this...what is your USCGA deadline? You could wait until the day before the deadline--and really, really, really think about what you want to do. Do you want to be a Coastie and a Coast Guard officer or do you want to be a cadet and an Army officer? These are two entirely different experiences. Did you say, 'Yes!' to the Civilian Prep? Or do you really not want to spend a year that way to get to USMA?
I know that there are other applicants out there with a great option in the hand and maybe a great scholarship to another program (No Plan B's in my lexicon)--who will wait until the deadline to make a decision because they want to see all the cards.

However, know that every year--there are kids who accept that they are going to THAT University on THAT Scholarship who get accepted to USMA or USNA or USAFA at the last minute--and they take that appointment and move on smartly with their lives. I caution you; however, that you have to know that you want to go to the Coast Guard Academy before you hit accept and go down that path or you will be unhappy later. Clearly, you wanted it enough to successfully apply. Also, the Coast Guard has a tremendous variety of jobs (my son's school's head master was the previous commandant (or something like that) of the Coast Guard Academy--so we have learned more about it than I would have believed--and my guy did not apply--he does not want to be in the Coast Guard.)

So, good luck. You've got this--but don't be frustrated that someone 'less qualified' than you is getting an appointment. It is a whole candidate score--you have no idea what other people wrote in their essays to describe their lives. It is intangible.
On an unrelated note, do the essays actually factor into the WCS? I was under the impression that they did not.

Although it doesn't have any effect on your WCS, it shows the admission committee about yourself: motive, passion, character, etc. I have a strong feeling my essays played a big role in my appointment but who knows.

I am a reapplicant to USMA and have been 3Qed since mid January. I have been appointed to USCGA, but I really want to go to West Point. I have contacted my RC and he has said I am still in the running but asked if I was interested in Civil Prep. It's frustrating because people have gotten in who are less qualified, but are getting in for other reasons.

Oh my gosh. Move on. Take your brilliance elsewhere.

I apologize that I can't speak as a college reapplicant, but I'd say that anything is still possible. I was offered a year of civil prep about a month ago, and I am probably going to accept it. My RC offered this to me because I was fully qualified, yet my chances of direct admission were slim because of district competitiveness. On my AOG scholarship papers that I received last week, it stated that I could still get an appointment this year, but it might be last minute or very unexpected to say the least.
Was the box with offer of civil prep on your portal under overview? DD's was until she logged in this morning and it is now gone.

My apologies for the late reply. I just checked and my offer box has disappeared as well. I am for sure that it was there (purple color box) several days ago. I am just assuming that they are updating it/unlocking those additional files of information that were not previously available to us!

May I ask which school your DD is leaning towards - if she is planning on accepting the AOG? I hope I get to meet her in the future.

Yes she is accepting AOG and has decided on NWP in California. This keeps costs down for us because it is only one semester there (only $2300 out of pocket) and then she can do second semester at a state school here, where she has scholarships that will cover the tuition. She spoke to Ms. Derbeck and really feels their program will suit her best and prepare her for WP. Let me know if you decide to take AOG and if you go to NWP, I can put you guys in touch before you go. I am sure she'd like to go in knowing someone :)
