Hello,

I am currently a junior, and am interested in applying to Navy. However, I have no athletics to put on my application.

I am heavily involved in my schools music department (Tuba and Trombone) and am a all-county player (all-state alternate, will by trying for all-national). Additionally, I am part of our research program, and will be conducting engineering research over the summer at a New York public university. Additionally, I am involved in the science olympiads team, and have gone to the New York state championship this year.

I attend a very competitive public highschool in new york, and am in the top twenty of my class of ~480. 4.0 gpa, 35 ACT composite.

What can I do to get accepted without having any athletics to place on my application? Thank you.

Is there anyway you could get involved with a sports team for your senior year of high school? 92% of the USNA class of 2020 played a Varsity sport. Your CFA will be even more important if you have a lacking sports background. Start preparing now to try and max out every event.

I could try to get a sport my senior year. If not, would a max score on every part of the CFA help a lot?

A maxed out CFA helps regardless of athletic background. But if you weren't able to add a sport, it's the only way you can prove to USNA you're ready for the physical demands of plebe summer, so it would help your application a lot if you could max it out.

lt would help but it's not just for the physical fitness that they like to see sports. It's the teamwork, leadership and time-management skills that playing a sport gets you. Just remember, they're probably going to see an app similar to your levels of academics and EC's, but with a varsity sport also included. Try for a sport next fall.

The issue I have is my commitments to many performing groups ex: Wednesday I have rehearsals until 9pm. I don't know if my schedule would allow for me to include a sport. (I have rehearsal almost every single day for music)

The CFA and your extracurricular activities go towards two different sections of your WCS. You can look at the class profiles to see the things that they look for but you will be competing against people who are multi varsity sport athletes as well as team captains, NHS Officer, fine arts, etc. Having a leadership role in band will add points but you will have a hard time overcoming other applicants that will have more points from varsity athletics. You should do some more research as it relates to the make up of your WCS and try to maximize your Activities. The academy wants well rounded individuals that do well in multiple activities.

With that said, if you want this, you should apply. There is no way to know how the competition will play out next year.

To max the CFA is quite an achievement, accomplished by very few.

I will apply regardless, maybe to air force academy as well. Either way, will be applying to ROTC scholarship programs as well.

A few points:

1. Great job on class ranking, GPA and ACT scores. Keep up the great work!
2. With respect to music, these achievements are even more impressive. I would highlight the team aspect of your band and success in competition as the result of great team work in your essays to USNA. This is something that could also be used to demonstrate teamwork and leadership. A friend of ours graduated 20+ years ago from USNA. He was rather weak in sports also (I believe he didn't play any sports in high school either), but was in a high school band all 4 years and ended up being in a band at USNA and did very well. His experience was that the plebe summer was much more challenging than he anticipated and in retrospect he should have been in better physical shape when showing up on I-day. Remember, this was a long time ago and USNA standards have gotten only higher for candidates.
3. See if you can participate in any community sports over the summer since I agree, it would be very challenging for you to add a sport in the senior year, not to mention you don't really have time to include such sport on your application since you want to have that completed before the end of August. So the question is what can you do in this area between now and end of August/ September? My advice would be to do something over the summer. You mentioned you would be doing research at the public university over the summer. Any sports camps, etc. you can do there at the same time?
4. Lastly, see a bio on a recently appointed USNA student that I was reminded of when I read your stats/experience.

@thegreen_faces noted that 92% of the class of 2020 were involved in varsity sports. That means that 8% were not. So yes, you have a shot, but you are at a disadvantage. Remember the SA look for involvement in sports for the leadership and teamwork attributes sports develope, not just the physical fitness aspects. You need to develop a strategy to show that your other activities have taught you those same skills.

@scituba123 It's sounds like you stay very busy with the activities you are engaged in, so you are able to show good time management skills. As many have mentioned, do very well on the CFA. If you like to run, perhaps talk to your schools cross country coach and explain your situation and that you would like to give XC a try. Maybe they could slightly modify your training schedule to allow you to continue full participating in your current activities without interference. But respect the coach. He wants someone that will commit and work hard to help the team, not someone that just wants to check a box. If you do decide to take up a sport, you will need to commit and work very hard to help make yourself and/or the team better, and not simply to have something to put on your application. You can get an appointment without participation but the odds are longer as others have stated. Good luck.

Is there a reason that you haven't participated in sports ? Are there any sports that you are interested in ? Why are you interested in USNA ?
The reason I ask is that if you get in, you will be surrounded by people who are interested in sports, and in many cases lived and breathed sports like you have music. I often describe USNA as one of the most physically active colleges....regardless of whether you play Varsity football or Company Fieldball, almost everyone is athletically competitive. Sure, there are exceptions, and many do very well, but as a whole, athletics are a major part of the USNA experience. I don't want to be negative or discouraging, but you should ask yourself if you will fit into and enjoy that environment.

You might be able to join the cross country team, if you have one. It would be good experience and it's one of those "large team" activities.
