Reapply Candidates

I am not sure where to post this question, but here goes: My DS did not receive a positive response from USCGA but, God love him, has hit the ground running in terms of recovering from the disappointment and moving on to Plan B (Plan B is VMI (Reservation Fee mailed today)). He intends to reapply to CGA. How in the world, if he's a VMI Rat, will he be able to retake SATs and ACTs, when, as I understand it, he will have no free time on the weekends?
VMI isn't anything to slouch about, but if he's dead set on USCGA a community college or four year public school and really concentrating on those scores seems to be the "reapply route". I remember DS mentioned one of the cadre at AIM had gone to a year at University of Colorado and reapplied.[/QUOTE]

Thank you for your response. It sounds as if reapplying to CGA from VMI will be extraordinarily difficult at best. To throw additional information into the mix, he also received a 3 year AROTC scholarship to VMI. The plan (taking into consideration that it may well be impossible): reapply to CGA from VMI and transfer if Appointment is offered. If CGA Appointment is not offered, continue at VMI with AROTC scholarship and commission Army. Lots of moving parts.

Remember as a VMI graduate you can apply for a Coast Guard commission directly through the Direct Commission Selected Schools program. See gocoastguard.com under active duty officer programs for the details to consider.
Yes--absolutely. The kicker is that somehow (!!) we did not realize until this past year that Coast Guard does not have an ROTC program. DS's/our thought for quite some time was that if CGA did not work out, no sweat, he would be perfectly happy with Coast Guard ROTC at VMI and then, as you stated, he would apply for a Coast Guard commission. Imagine our surprise when we realized there is no such thing as CGROTC. Although he would love/would have loved to attend USCGA, the actual goal has been to be an Officer in the USCG, regardless of how he gets there. So the question becomes: pay full tuition so that it is still possible to commission USCG, or take advantage of a generous AROTC scholarship and commission Army...

If test scores are his biggest weakness, then I would have to agree that going to VMI may not be the best option. One thing you will get at MMI, NMMI, or NWP is ACT/SAT prep. However getting into an SAT/ACT improvement course and then going to a local university or community college may work just as well.

Yes...darn those pesky Math SAT scores :)

My daughter's roommate was turned down by CGA last year. I am not certain if she reapplied this year, but she plans to commission directly into the CG after graduation from VMI, since VMI is one of the schools the Coast Guard will commission directly from. She's in the Navy ROTC at VMI to fulfill her necessary requirements. I am not sure how he would be able to take the ACT/SAT, at least until the second semester (which could be too late to help).

I would suggest contacting the Naval ROTC unit at VMI for more clarification on the options for Coast Guard through VMI. Good luck!

I would recomed looking into doing the coast guard auxiliary university program if it is possible at VMI. They have about a 70% acceptance rate to OCS, and is the closest to a coast guard rotc program possible.

As of last semester there were some CG Officers/VMI alum trying to set up an AUP program at VMI, but I haven't heard more. Additionally, there is no POC for USCG at VMI, CG questions should be directed to recruiters for specific program in question. NROTC really only knows about Navy/Marine Corps programs aside from the basic info online.

From what I understand, even if there isn't a unit at your school, you can still participate in AUP through the remote collaberative unit.

The closest to ROTC that the Coast Guard has is the CSPI program. This can pay for your third and fourth year of college, with a stipend. However, there are restrictions on the schools which may participate. Go to gocoastguard.com and check this out to see if you are interested.

This program is called the Direct Commission Selected Schools Program. Here is the link: https://www.gocoastguard.com/active...irect-commission-selected-school-dcss-program

VMI is on the list of schools which qualifies an applicant to seek a direct commission through the program. The link above can also be used to find out how to contact the coast guard for more info. You are correct to think that it might be difficult for your DS to improve his standardized test score during the first year at VMI. However, successful re-applicants have come from several SMCs into service academies over the years - so it is not impossible.

As far as the re-applicant process while at an SMC - the demands on your DS's time would be the biggest hurdle (especially during the first semester) to overcome in making it happen. There is not a institutional bias against applicants of the service academies at SMCs - but they are also not set-up to make it easy...your DS would have to seek out assistance to make it happen. Getting a pass off campus for an early Saturday morning to go and take the test is one obstacle - spending time studying to improve his performance is another. It would certainly give him some fodder to update his essays with - but he would probably need some help with other aspects of the application (e.g., rec letters).

Your DS sounds like a good candidate for a self-prep program like MMI (and others) - at least something to consider. A possible solution is to request a deferment on entry to VMI for one year and then spend that time at a program designed to assist your DS in his self-prep for service academy admission while earning some college credits which may transfer to VMI.
