Army ROTC 3rd Scholarship Board Results

If I received a scholarship to a school I do not plan on attending, is there a guarantee that I can change the scholarship to the school I intend to attend? So in my case I'm planning to attend Virginia Tech, but my scholarships are for UMass and RPI.

I know who you are then, as you are on my list. The transfer instructions will be in your Winner's Packet. What sold you on V Tech over RPI?

Well I was waitlisted for RPI and I'm unsure if I will be given admissions. VT's Corps Of Cadets is also attractive to me because I want to experience that military life style. I was enthusiastic about both schools, but after acceptance letters came out and additional scholarship I received for Vtech I felt it was a better fit for me.

My daughter did not receive a scholarship but she is still entering her school's ROTC program. At what point can she contract with the Army?

If she was to receive a scholarship at any point, she would contract when that activates. If not, then MS3 level/juniors would contract. Even if not on scholarship she would start receiving her stipend. Many schools have scholarship money available to start the sophomore year, or even second semester of freshman year, good luck to your daughter and please keep us posted on her journey!

Hopefully if RPI is still in the running, you have called or emailed the ROO? My daughter was wait listed at one of her schools offered last year. Long story short, she told the ROO immediately and was accepted the next day, a month before most people knew their final status. And in 3 weeks she will take finals at that school and finish her MS1 year. A waitlist is not a no. It is a "you are next in line, waiting to see how many people accept their offer first".... The ROO (hint hint, he is on this board) should receive a call from you today if you have not called him already. Keep ALL your options open until the deadline, this is a big decision! If you want RPI, see if the wait list problem can be taken care of so that all of your options are open. If ROTC scholarship has no pull on admissions then you can precede with the transfer. Good luck!

Edit: by the way, when my daughter finally received her acceptance, a few days after receiving her scholarship, she also got a call stating she would be receiving additional scholarship funds as well. She used those this year, as she had a 3 year AD scholarship.

Sf-86 is the form that deals with security clearances. It will be much easier to complete over the next few weeks with your kid. Lots of questions on there that most kids may not know the answer to. You can fine the most recent version online , complete and have the future cadet take to school. One less thing to worry about.

Thanks for the advice, we are working our B and C plans right now.

DS was awarded the 3 year AROTC scholarship to the first choice but he will go NROTC MO ,his plan A.

My son also was notified of a change on his board via email. He checked his ROTC acct and had been upgraded from a 3 to a 4 year scholarship. I am beyond happy, but have a few questions. Will any new paperwork come in the mail? Is the active duty service time the same for both scholarships.

Since the scholarship is now a 4 year your son will be able to contract the start of his freshman year. He will need to complete an array of paperwork from 1099 to direct deposit paperwork, the major one will be his 104R which lays out a schedule for the next 4 years, this is something he will need to work on with his advisor when he starts to register for classes and over the summer. Have your son start a conversation with his new battalion, see if he can get the paperwork ahead of time so he can get as much of it done as possible before he heads for school. This will help a lot in getting contracted sooner providing he passes his first APFT when he gets to school. The battalion should be able to get things going but don't be surprised if it takes some time, they are busy with graduation, summer training, making travel arrangements, it's a busy time in the battalion but still make contact with them.

Yes the service obligation is the same, for active it's 4 years AD and 4 years IRR, NG/Reserve is 8 years.

Congratulations to your son on the upgrade.....and your pocket book as well.

Thanks- I will definitely have him contact the ROTC program to get the paperwork going.

My DS received an Ike Skelton Early Commissioning Program Scholarship for Valley Forge. Does anyone know if it's possible to petition Cadet Command to have this changed to a regular ROTC scholarship? The tuition at VF is quite high and we are confused about this offer given that this was not something he applied for.

The ECP pays the VF tuition.

No, USACC will not change it as your son didn't score high enough on the OML for a 3 or 4 yr scholarship. The next group of students were offered the 2YR scholarship even if the weren't interested in to. VF is only a two year school as a Military Junior College. Your son will have to transfer after two years to another college to complete his bachelor's degree.

Most if not all of the Cadre will probably be gone over the summer so there may not be anyone to meet with, he could always see if the HR person is in the office.

Tell your son to get the 104R form from his battalion so he has it when he meets with his advisor.

When we were at the AROTC briefing at the accepted students day event, the cadre really talked a lot about the 104R and how critical it was to get it completed as soon as you get started in the fall. We decided to get a jump start on it. You can get the 104R yourself and start work on it before you arrive. There's some you won't be able to fill out, but the classes are easy enough to fill out on your own... even though it's the most time consuming part... and it will be a "working copy" for when they sit down to actually do it for real.

Great idea posting the link for the 104R

One thing to remember, when we first looked at the form with our older son our first thought was "How in the world can he know what classes he will be taking for the next four years since things always change from year to year". After a conversation he had with the Battalion HR it became clearer that they are just looking for a plan that ensures they can graduate on time with their selected major and carry the required credits each semester, that made it a lot less stressful filling it out. Remember that this is a living document and it will for sure change as they go along, classes they list may not be available every semester, they decide to take a different class, you just need to make sure they update it as they move forward.

Just for the fun of it we looked at the final college transcript for both sons and compared it to their original 104R, other then the first semester, it changed every semester after.

When filling out the 104-R, make sure it is either the AUG 2013 or SEP 2013 version. I don't know why there are two versions, but they are both acceptable. All versions previous to AUG 2013 will be kicked back by Cadet Command.
