USAFA Class of 2021 Appointments

So what are these unpublished minimums? Honestly I thought once you were at candidate status you were eligible to be considered for an appointment? Maybe I am wrong. Of course I know they prefer higher scores than the minimum and every candidate should strive to be perfect score. I read these forums. Just confusing. ..

Son at 1400 still waiting.

I know. I am confused as well.

So does that mean Im out? I got a 580 reading 680 math.

As RickD_USAF stated, you're not out, and, based on the stats for the class of 2020, your SAT scores alone would not seem to be a disqualifying issue. According to the stats, your math score is in the mid-50% (and above the mean). So, if the class had 1168 admitted, 584 of those appointees had scores that fell within the 620-720 range, and only 292 had higher than that (292 also scored below 620 on math). Although your verbal score is slightly below the mid-50% range, 25% of last year's class (or 292 appointees) also had below 600 for verbal. It seems odd that people are getting calls from their counselor or MOC offices saying that scores within the mid-50% range are disqualifying, but maybe when considered as part of the applicant's overall candidate score, the SAT score becomes a deciding factor.

Class of 2021 College Board Scores (SAT)

Mid 50% Range
Verbal: 600-690
Math: 620-720
Mean
Verbal: 642
Math: 671

It is important to remember it is the whole person and the formula may not be obvious to any of us...actually obviously is not...you are not out until you are out. I currently have a cadet and he has friends that were accepted in late April and well into May :) My motto "never pray for patience, or you will surely be tested". Best of luck to everyone!

Wait so my question is, if it might take that long should I go ahead and accept plan B just in case or??

@sportsfan

Noone can tell you what to do, but.... DS has accepted Plan B offer and we're rolling that way. Meaning setting up financial aid documents, but not signing any final loan docs or paying deposit till 15th passes.
But even if you do all that and come May 1st you get a pleasant surprise email of USAFA acceptance, then you call Plan B school and tell them your good news. And don't fund any loans and ask for deposit to be refunded. If they refuse to refund deposit, then you smile and say OK because I'd rather loose a few hundred buck and have DS go to USAFA!!!

Very true losing a few hundred bucks is nothing compared to getting what? Like 400k? Haha Thank you. I think I will go ahead and do that.

Waiting here in CA-45......like many of you DS is handling this better than me. No Principal Nom given in our district and only one slot to fill as last year they had 4. USAFA has been his goal from Middle School. He has a 680 Reading and 790 Math and we were told the Math was double weighted by the ALO. Hoping to hear some good news today or tomorrow!

So what are these unpublished minimums?

This is what USAFA's admissions page says about scores:
"Students who score below 580 verbal and 560 math on the SAT Reasoning and below 24 English/reading and 25 math/science reasoning on the ACT normally will not be competitive for an appointment."
Source: http://www.academyadmissions.com/admissions/the-application-process/academic-performance/

It specifically says "appointment," so that doesn't rule out Prep School and Falcoln Scholarships.

If I am still waiting for a decision from the USAFA, what is the probability I could still be accepted? Does the Academy wait until the end to send out rejection letters or narrow the applicant pool from both ends till the fill all the spots?

Yeah this is becoming arduous, no word from Dodmerb or USAFA, just deny us already. So we can go on with life. Kind of concerned that this is the way the AF does business now. Im a AF vet, I think I can say that.

I understand there is lots of angst and anxiety.. But, this process is not intended to be simple. For a good reason, it is complicated. Those of us that have been lucky enough to live a little while in this country can attest, all that is good, is worth waiting for..

If this were easy, everyone could do it.. Part of this process for my son, is learning to wait and still balance his life not knowing if he is in or out..

There is no doubt, we want to know now!! But, the process and anticipation is what makes it special as well!

Thus the phrase...."Keep the faith". It's hard but it's worth it. If we give up climbing the mountain, we'll never reach the summit, which is the goal! Good luck to everyone still waiting to hear!

Personally I'd rather we didn't hear than to be given the no. That way there is still hope, but I'm a glass half full kind of person.

One thing to keep in mind on the SAT scores is the test recently changed and they may have new minimums. I think the class of 2021 is unique because some will have the old test, some new and some both. DS was told they would not super score between old and new so I'm sure that complicates things as well.

Just curious. At USAFA, is it fairly common that a qualified primary nominee fails to get an offer?
