Boot Info

My son didn't bring boots to R day, I had them sent right after A day. This worked for us. He really likes the Nike boots.
Do you know if they run true to size? Did he go up or down a 1/2 size?
He went up a half size. He's normally a 10, he got a 10.5. Again these Nike's are good for after basic just wear what they give you for basic since you will tear them up in basic.

My DS bought the Bellville 690 last year. He loved them. He ran in them for about a month before BCT started. They held up well and he plans to buy another pair before the summer. The key for him was they were lightweight and reviews said they held up better than the Nikes.

He was issued another pair during BCT. At times they allowed them to wear the pair he brought and at other times they were told to wear the issued pair (in Jack's Valley). Most sure to read notes on sizing as they vary with manufacturer.

The most important thing is to wear and exercise in them ahead of time.

From what I've read about the boots, they are not waterproof, which is something USAFA specifically asks for. I think I am going to avoid buying them and instead going for the Bellville or Danner ones instead, which I know to be waterproof.

I purchased the S2V Rockies. They are a bit heavier weighing about 3.5 pounds in contrast to the other 1.5 pounds, but they meet regulation and also have incredible grip.

Do the Rockies run true to size? Did you need to go up/down 1/2 size? Thanks.

Thank you. They arrived today and seem to fit well, even though we ordered his regular size. I see what you mean about not being sturdy enough for basic. He will save them for afterward. Now we will need to decide about another pair or just going with what is issued.

I typically wear between a 9.5 to 10 depending on the shoe. This boot was a size 9. The 10 fit but they were a bit wide at the toe. I highly recommend you try on the boot with thick socks before purchasing them.

Can someone with the Belleville 690 on hand weigh them for me please? I am trying to compare weights, and can't find anything on the weight of the 690. I'll probably be a 10, but I just need a ballpark, so anything works. Thanks!

Thanks. Will likely have to order, so will make sure of good exchange/return policy, just in case.

I did some digging in some older threads, and it would appear that a large number of people said bringing your own boots wasn't a good idea (at least in years past). Most of the posts in the thread said it was up to cadre if you could or could not wear them and in reality breaking in the boots beforehand didn't spare you from the blisters. Does anyone know if this is still the case? I would hate to go out and buy a lighter, different pair of boots (I already have two pairs of standard issue Belleville's) if in the end, it's only going to make me a target when I get off the bus and I probably won't get to wear them for the majority of BCT.

I don't know, but the instructions to appointees booklet says that "it is highly recommended" that you bring a pair, and I pretty much take that as a demand.

My friend, 2C, recommended me to bring my own boots to BCT. I asked him the same question about whether the cadre would allow it, and he assured me that I would be fine bringing my own boots.

I've been talking to a cadet too and he said that bringing a pair of broken in boots definitely helped out.

Responding to my own post lol

Belleville 690 weighs 4.25 lbs.
Danner Rivot GTX weighs 3.56 lbs, for comparison.
I think I remember the Rocky S2v weighing 3.38 lbs.

I ordered a pair of Danner's that came in the mail today. They have the Danner logo on the side, is that okay for USAFA regulations?

Since Danner's are one of three pairs of boots USAFA specifically named I would certainly expect that having the small logo on the side is OK.

FWIW, DS was told during Appointee Tour that the cadre will not be checking on the boots manufacturer or brand as long as the boots look sage green and 8 inches high. The 2nd Lt assured me that if DS is being harassed to call him.... In short, DS will stick with his Belleville 633 boots.

I have to chuckle at a 2nd Lt's "assurance"

And how will your DS call anyone at that point? He will no longer have a phone.

The Cadre will "harass", I'm sorry, give personal attention to whoever they wish for whatever reason they want.

But, I wouldn't worry too much about the boots.

IMG_5382.PNG For any fellow civilian families out there struggling with acquiring boots for your appointee to break in, if you are interested in the Danner Rivot GTX they are on sale online
at harrysarmysurplus. We saved about $100 compared to ordering direct from Danner. DS found they run true to size for his running shoes.
It's been quite a learning experience. We've ordered and returned 4 boots from different stores at this point and set off all the fraud alerts with Citibank!
