Importance of Boys / Girls State

I agree with RedDog22, if you can attend you should attend. It will help your WCS, and is a truly amazing experience.

On a side note/rant, as a Eagle scout and Boys State attendee, I can say they should be no where near the same points towards WCS. I applied directly to my Boys State program and all I had to do was pay a fee to attend - I was not 'selected.' Although it is a good program, there was no accountability, or rank everyone must obtain. The kids across the hall, who were selected by their American Legion, spent a majority of the time hidden in their room eating pizza with the door locked. In my opinion, it is sad that WP views them comparably. I hold achieving the rank of Eagle far above a camp I paid to go to.

I agree. I'm not sure why Boy's State is viewed so much more favorably than other comparable events, or things such as being an Eagle Scout.
 
DS has a conflict with our state's Boys State. We did some digging and found another state with a timeline that worked. He emailed the director and explained that he was a candidate for USMA and they let him in their program. It was after the deadline for students to apply. We have to pay the fee but I think it will be well worth it. This state does a county day leading up to the week long event and DS loved it. They ran mock county council meetings and discussed and voted on real issues that county has had to vote on in the past. He is looking forward to full event in June. RC and FFR both mentioned boys state in our first meeting so I am glad he was able to find something that worked.
 
You get extra points under leadership for Boys/Girls State toward your WCS. If given the opportunity it is highly recommended to do it.
