My DS received email from USAFA today saying he is not being offered an appointment. I assume TWE will come in mail. Not even an offer to go to the Prep School. However, it seems it is more for those that are not Academically prepared. My DS is in top 3%, 3.95 GPA, National Honor Society, Top of his JrRotc, etc. Yet, he didn't get in! What it all boils down to? Sports! He chose Academics over Sports! Now, we are going to have to figure out a way to get him into Prep School on our own and start over with the application process. I am overwhelmed with disappointment and heart broken.

I'm the same here airforcemom. I have 4.3 GPA, top 6% of class and the Group Commander, C\Colonel of my JROTC Unit, and involved in many of their activities, but never did any sports! It's too bad Rifle Exhibition doesn't count as one, because man, does it take some muscle to throw those rifles around!!!

I truly feel your pain......DS received TWE last year on April 7 (by the way, you will not receive anything in the mail). 3 weeks later he received an offer of a Falcon Foundation Scholarship which he gladly accepted and took to NWP. Appointment came on February 22 this year. Don't give up the hope! Mrs. Durbeck at NWP is fabulous.....give her a call tomorrow if you want to learn more about the school.

You can never know exactly why your son was not accepted. I recommend you call his Admissions Adviser or Guidance Councilor and ask for insight. Believe me, you are not the only one to have received the dreadful TWE today and have to start all over. I was also involved in many things too: 6 years of endless Civil Air Patrol involvement, Top of JROTC program leadership positions, JROTC Raider Team Commander and Drill team member, Varsity Track, Class Vice President, Church involvement. My point is not to shine the light on myself, but show that their are many of us who have very impressive resumes like your sons. There are SO many things that go into evaluating a candidate it's crazy. Every year there are thousands of USAFA qualified candidates that don't make the cut, and unfortunately your son and I along with thousands of others fell onto that list. It's ok to be disappointed, believe me I feeling your pain. it's normal. But remember, it's not about how we react to bad news that defines us, but how we recover from it is what's most important. 3.95 GPA ... WOW. That's impressive. Overall, some doors may close in our faces, but take advantage of those still open.....and then maybe try and open the others again. You'll receive an appointment next year and look bad and laugh at all of this. I wish you and your son strength and good luck in your future!

Thanks for the encouragement! He also has been in CAP, just received his Billy Mitchell Award. Has volunteered at our church for several years. I mean, really a great candidate. He's gonna reach out to both his admissions counselor and ALO. The TWE mentioned he should take classes that he has already taken and make sure he is in good physical shape, when he already is. I am just beside myself. We had been told by several sources involved in this process that he was such a great candidate that if he didn't get direct entry, he would get the Prep School offer. The TWE even says they are not offering it either.

When your DW received TWE last year, did it mention the scholarship? My DS' TWE said it was not being offered.

Sent you a PM.

DS received his TWE today unfortunately. (college re-applicant). An extremely competitive process. It doesn't boil down to one thing; not sports, not GPA or SAT scores, its a combination of the whole person but even with that said, still very perplexing and illusive. Son had above 3.75 GPA, 710 Math, 610 Verbal, 12 varsity letters, 5 of them Team captain, All conference in three sports, All-State in one, President of class first 3 years in high school, Executive President of Student Govt, Superintendent's Award, attended USNASS, numerous other awards and achievements regarding community, sports, leadership, merit, etc, currently on AFROTC scholarship and received recommendations from Lt Colonel and Captain in USAF. An incredible young man who will make an excellent officer and leader in the USAFA not matter what course he takes. I'm so proud of him.

Congrats for all those that worked hard to get their LOA and for all those that worked hard and didn't receive it, keep the faith. You have all accomplished so much and have learned much along the way.

This forum was very helpful. Thank you all for remaining positive.

There was no mention of the Falcon Foundation Scholarship in his TWE....it actually mentioned he was not getting USAFA or the USAFA prep school. A separate, totally unexpected email came weeks later with the Falcon offer...we had already mentally shifted to Virginia Tech and we had paid the deposit.

I just received my TWE as well. The entire process has been quite the roaler coaster for me, especially since right after my interview with my ALO, he told me that I was practically a shoe in and that I should expect to get an appointment. Oh well, looks like it just was not meant to be. At this point, I am just super glad that I applied to a plan B school and received a Type 1 AFROTC scholarship to go there, since I will most definitely be going that route now.

Wow...if he can't get in, who can? How proud you must be. Sorry to hear about this, but it sounds like he has a huge future ahead of him!
