For Those Awaiting an Appointment/TWE

My DS received his TWE today, no Appointment nor Prep School. He wants to apply for scholarships and enter Greystone Prep Academy. We didn't apply for any scholarships, as we had been told he was just what the Academies look for and at a minimum they would put him thru the Prep School. Well, now we are going to have to figure out another way. I see people mention Air Force Reserves as a good way to get in, when re-applying, I see ROTC as a good way, but I am a single mom with no support from his dad. I can't afford to pay for him to go to Prep School and from what I have read you can't get FAFSA or normal aid. He would have to get a whole lot of Scholarships to cover the really high tuition for the year. He's Academically highly prepared, top of his JROTC, jut receive Billy Mitchell award in CAP, very strong resume. I need to know what would be the smartest thing to do. We can't apply for JRotc Scholarship, too late. Help, if you know from experience.

@airforcemom
All is not lost, it's only a new beginning. The destination can be the same under a different journey!
AFROTC also offers an in-school scholarship at a long list of universities (don't think any prep schools though). Goes without saying your DS must be enrolled in that university, and in the AFROTC classes there for at least 1 semester. At the beginning of the 2nd semester the AFROTC commander at the university can nominate a high performing candidate to receive the in-school scholarship. If chosen, it is awarded towards the middle/end of the 2nd semester and is retroactive to the beginning of the 2nd semester. Which means the 1st semester is yours to pay however you can arrange. The in-school scholarship is not a 100% tuition, but's close. Check it out here to read about the types and requirements: https://www.afrotc.com/scholarships/types

Good luck to your DS, keep pushing forward and reaching higher!!

Not sure if this is super important, but I'm from CA-38 and I'm pretty sure I was on the appointee list somewhere in the 80s or so. Seems no one on the forum is waiting from my district though.

Yes you were "KamikazeKim." Sorry about missing you.

So KrisKatz and afamom99 is only one still have not gotten the TWE. So many So Cal. got the TWE yesterday. I wish all of them the best with Plan B.

Sorry for all the TWEs. Question-my DS was medically disqualified in the fall and the Academy immediately asked for a waiver. So, his portal has said for months Complete but Medically Disqualified. No TWE yesterday. So, will he eventually get a TWE or do we already have our answer?

@par1107 at this late stage in the admissions cycle, you should have your son CALL his admissions counselor to ask this question.
It would definitely demonstrate that he has his eyes on the prize and is as motivated as ever.

So Cal CA-25 still no TWE.

Sorry about that Thunder, I will add you to the still waiting in So Cal list.

Thanks, he's not giving up at all! He's reapplying July 1st and going to take classes at our local jr college and enroll in their AFRotc program. He's been on the phone with his ALO & Admissions Counselor today and they gave him great advise. He was told he does not need to go to a prep school, he is fully prepared and qualified. It was about the number of slots available. This will be good for him, he will get a good taste of college coursework before he goes to the Academy. He's in all AP classes, but I keep telling him, it isn't the same. The HS teachers are more lenient and they will let them do extra credit work if they need to. College Professors are not like that at all!

Son received his TWE. :( Heartbroken and disappointed but resilient. He is going to join the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M. He was accepted into the honors engineering program. Now distracted with a big choice. He was awarded both AFROTC or NROTC scholarships to study aerospace engineering. The kid is overwhelmed by this choice.

Very proud of him. He's a great kid. His stats are on par with everyone else's, he plays 2 varsity sports at a Texas 6A school and works over 20 hours a week at a part time job overseeing and coaching youth soccer training.

As soon as he decides between NROTC and AFROTC then he will make the choice about reapplying.

I'm so sorry DS, but your son is going to be amazing at TAMU. I will most likely see you there!!!

DD received TWE on Monday like so many others...taking all pretty well and firming up her plan B. I only wish the letter gave more information on what specifically would make her more competitive next time!
Congrats to those still in the game!

Oh, @TexasSoccerMom I know he must be disappointed--so much effort and so many applications and waiting--but the Corps of Cadets at TAMU and the choice between an AFROTC and NROTC...that is pretty dreamy. What great opportunities! What will he decide!?! You will have to let all of us know.

He's undecided right now. His choice and I am just supporting it. I'm considering unhooking his phone though because he is getting lots of unsolicited advice from well meaning family members calling him and trying to steer him one direction which is confusing him even more.

Reading through this thread, I felt compelled to put in my 2 cents.

First off, a huge congrats to those who have received an appointment! It is indeed one of the greatest moments of your lives. Now get your butt in PT gear and get yourselves in the best physical and mental state of your life! If not, BCT will eat you alive. Think of what's to come as "risk management" or better yet, reducing pain and optimizing gain. The better shape that you are in, the less stress you will self induce-you know what I mean?! Less stress means clearer thinking, which in turn frees up time & energy, which can then be used to help your squadron brothas and sistas. It's a chance for you to shine and promote teamwork, know what I'm sayin'?!

For those of you with TWEs, get over it as soon as you can and move on with plan x. Sooner the better...trust me, I know. I can tell you that my road wasn't an easy one. I wasn't born with a golden spoon in my mouth nor did I possess a whole lot of talent. Looking back, the trials and tribulations made me into who I am. As the saying goes, what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger. You know...no pain=no gain. If life was always just peachy, none of us will know it when we are blessed/given a life changing gift even if it hit us on the head. I know that this is not what you want to hear but give it a few decades and you'll know where I'm coming from.

I understand the disappointment with rejections. My DS as well as my wife & I went through this last year. The best thing to do is to brush it off and move on as time is of essence. Keep the big picture in sight, which is to earn those butter bars and serve in the world's greatest military. AFROTC is a great option to earning a commission. The first 2 years are commitment free, unless you are on a scholarship. My DS joined ROTC and enrolled in the local J.C. He took academy level classes and did well. Get with the ALO and school counselor to come up with a plan. They'll be more than happy to help you. If your DS/DD decides to reapply to the academy, this is one way to approach it. It worked for my DS. Who knows, your DS/DD may enjoy ROTC and decide that this is the path he/she wants to pursue. My DS would have been perfectly happy with ROTC if the academy didn't work out the second time. Remember the BIG picture an keep the focus on the prize!

Truth is, he could flip a coin--and will end up happy and successful and proud--and serving our great Nation just the same. I work with a recently retired Air Force three star general--we were talking about D's application process--and he said that he had a USAFA appointment and an NROTC to Notre Dame. That he went into his bedroom, closed the door, flipped a coin, it was heads USAFA--and his life has been awesome. He built an entire new agency within the DoD--and is so knowledgeable, kind, and extraordinarily visionary--but he said, "My life would have been awesome if it had been tails." There is no difference really--the go to sea versus be stationed in landlocked places...very little difference.

Yes, its a win-win situation. Just wanting son to make his own decision. Not based on well meaning relatives with good intentions talking to every person they know or strangers they meet at the grocery store who served in either of these branches and getting their opinions and calling son every night giving him a full report. This is just clouding his brain with all sorts of secondhand information.
