I'll be honest. When I got my tour I hadn't accepted my appointment yet, and when this came up, most of the cadets I talked to asked where else I was looking at. My first choice was the Air Force Academy, and I was fairly open about that them. Every cadet I talked to, once they heard that, carefully explained what they thought the differences between USAFA and USMA were, and always ended with "but dude, do what's best for YOU" (or something to that effect). I respected that. No one tried to win me over to West Point or trash talk about the "chair force", they simply heard me out, gave their input, and held USAFA in a very good light and respected them and gave their experience at USMA. That in itself is proof of the effective leadership training that is given at USMA.

In addition to that, seeing it firsthand, it wasn't hell. It's still college. Yes, your plebe year is hard, but everyone there said that most of it is your attitude. They said to not expect to go to any parties and have huge blocks of time to just Netflix and Chill, but that you learn to appreciate the little moments throughout the day. You have to make the most of the opportunities given, even if you don't get your first choice, you give it what you've got and soak up USMA and buy into it. Every cadet I talked to seemed like a pretty normal college student, just with a desire to lead and serve. I accepted my appointment when I got home.[/
