USAFA Class of 2021 Appointments

Sherrie, that 'out in the middle of nowhere' thing often wears down kids from the MD/VA/DC area--they generally stick it out and then are happy as clams to be with their 'gang' when they matriculate to the academy but often getting through that first semester is tough because of the isolation. If you have questions PM me...my friend works down there and can give you the skinny.

My DD and I were at MMI yesterday checking it out. We had gone to R-MA the day before in Virginia. My DD got a Falcon Scholarship this year. We believe MMI is a better choice for her. How did your DS like MMI overall? It seems to be a mix between a regular college and a military school in strictness. She only talked to one student yesterday who is a Falcon scholar. It is out in the middle of nowhere and we weren't sure if the class sizes will still give her the learning she needs. Are the teachers really accessible and able to give one on one instruction if need be?

Congratulations on Falcon scholarship!!
That's fantastic ! After talking with my son , it seems like right now everyone is ready to move on to the next step in their young lives. We live in a rural area so his transition wasn't very difficult. He stayed busy on weekends with joining Flying Tigers and also stayed busy through the week by working 10hrs a week tutoring. As he got to know others, and had some free time they could go to Tuscaloosa for wings , BBQ, movies, etc. SAP kids hang together.

When we went for parents weekend, I was so excited to share with him all of the things he was experiencing in his first year in college, thinking it would remotely resemble my college experience.
It's very different. It's a junior college, not a 'destination' college and most of the cadets are there 'on their way to somewhere else', so you don't see that 'I'm at my dream school, it's the best place" mentality. Non SAP cadets are often there for sports, they have incredible programs and young athletes can build their resumes for a D2 or D1 scholarship. There's an ECP (early commissioning program) for Army cadets.

That said, our DS has tremendous respect and admiration for all of his instructors. They are all very accessible, small classes, lots of class interaction interspersed with lectures and use of technology to enhance learning . MMI is aware of the needs for academic support and they just invested in and opened their Academic Success Center on campus which is where cadets can seek out help in all subjects throughout the afternoon and evenings. Tutoring is provided at no extra cost.
A new gym just opened on campus as well.

Our DS had multiple AP classes in high school but still felt he benefited from MMI instructors esp his English teacher who worked on essays with him during the reapplying process. Everyone on campus was accessible and I felt they looked out for cadets.
I know we would not be celebrating his appointment right now without them. Please feel free to PM me with any questions!

DS received TWE 4/17 after a very long and agonizing wait. Now he is looking at NWP in hopes to reapply for next year. Any thoughts are helpful and appreciated. We live in southern Maine and I have not see much posted from this area. Does anyone know if each state gets a specific number of appointments?

To some extent, yes. Maine has two congressional districts and two senators, so one might expect at least four appointments each year to each SA, provided the MOCs' have less than 5 cadets/mids at the SAs when the new class starts.

Please have him talk to his ALO & Admissions Counselor before spending the money on a Prep School! If he was fully qualified and competitive it will be a waste of good money. The ones getting turned down this past week are strictly because they didn't have enough spots open. They can tell your DS if there is an area he needs to improve in. They told my DS just to go to any school and keep his grades up and be active in ROTC, and reapply July 1st. The 2nd timers are considered before the 1st timers.

Welp, got my twe this Monday, with no offer of scholarship. Feeling a bit down, but I'm looking at this as an opportunity to learn the ropes of the application process, and as a chance to improve myself for reapplication next year. Congrats to all those who got accepted.

Updated myself to accepted (141).

Any recent appointments, falcon scholarships, or TWEs since last monday? Still waiting here in VA-08.

What does no LOA mean? Wouldn't everyone that got accepted receive an LOA in some form?

Weirdest thing just happened about an hour ago. After getting his TWE on 4/17 my DS moved on and accepted his AFROTC scholarship on 4/22. We put the money down at the school, did the tour yesterday and so on. Today, we received a call from our Senator's office stating that my DS will be getting an appointment offer on Friday. WTH?

Congratulations!!!! Perhaps someone who was ahead on the slate didn't accept. (There were a few of these last year on here.).

Probably. He has some soul searching to do. He visited the corps and absolutely loved the program at U of D. The tour was also great yesterday. I'm not sure how binding the scholarships are once you accept. Not even sure where to begin on this one. I told him to pray, soul search, and list it all out before he makes any decision. This is a life changing event for a 17 year old.

Obviously he needs to wait until receiving an official "appointment" before making any decision, but there are a lot of 17 and 18 year olds out there right now that wish they had his "problem". There is not a "wrong" decision to be made in my opinion. Good luck to your DS!!
