NROTC Board Review Schedule

Congrats Fastfood! Do you mind sharing some of your stats? DS is a Jr just about to open his application for hopefully the 1st board.

Hi, I'm one of the rare tier 3 majors (majoring in Poli Science). My stats are:

English/Math ACT superscore: 34
Overall ACT Superscore: 31
SAT: Did not take
GPA Weighted: 3.75

Honor Societies: English, Math, Art, Social Studies, and National Honor Society

Extra circulars:
-President of Student Body for Student Council
-National Honor Society Vice President
-Intern at United States House of Representatives
-Editor in Chief of Yearbook
-President of Junior States of America
-Tutor
-Shift Manager at fast food place
-450 Hours of community Service

The biggest surprise? Was not apart of a single sport, either JV or Varsity, during my entire 4 years in high school.

I will share some of my DS stats, he did get in after the first board. (whew). My older DS was an ISR 4 years ago....so I will share both.
DS1 ACT 34 GPA 5.796 on 5.0 Class Rank 3 out of 530 Approximately 10 AP classes.
DS2 ACT 32 GPA 5.796 on 5.0 Class Rank 5 out of 520 Approximately 10 AP classes.
DS1 - 4 year Football, Baseball, Bowling. Varsity level 2 years each. Community Service - close to 500 hours throughout high school; many of which were not school requirements but on his own. NHS, Key Club, Interact Club to name a few.
DS2 - 4 year Football (3 year Varsity starter / 2 year captain), Baseball (brought up to Varsity during Soph year / 1 year captain), Bowling League since age 3. 1 year basketball. Link Crew - mentor and coach incoming freshman throughout school year to ensure they adjust to high school - 2 years; tutor of AP classes 1 year; NHS, Key Club to name a few. Community Service hours approximately 250 over 4 years of high school. Less CS hours than DS1 but more leadership and athletics than DS1. Also planned, coordinated and organized the first Annual Military Appreciation Day at our HS during a baseball game.
That's not everything but I think it gives an idea......academics is important, but also focus on leadership opportunities.
DS1 is graduating from Notre Dame in May. Commissioning in May.....Naval Aviator.
DS2 will be attending Notre Dame in the Fall. Had some great choices though....even got into Yale.....make sure you are well rounded.

@serviceaboveAll One thing I have learned from this process, both the NROTC and college applications is that the stats tell only part of the story. Reading the threads, I have seen applicants who posted great stats not receive a scholarship and others with seemingly lesser stats receive scholarships. The selection board is looking for the scholar, athlete, leader. If you are low in one area, you may make it up in another. Looking at @FastFood44, he did not have any athletics and is a tier 3 major, but had impressive leadership and service and high ACT score (and maybe he put up impressive numbers on the fitness test as well). It is important to really sell yourself in the essay and the interview as well. My DS did some mock interviews with people who are used to conducting interviews and received some good feedback to improve his interview skills. I believe that helped him. He earned an ISR. Good luck to your DS.

I also have to think that a lot of these applicants may have the same score or scores very close. The line is drawn some where and the names below the line might have literally missed it by a millimeter! For my daughter last year and last board getting a 3 year for Army, for all we know she could of been the last one awarded and the kids not getting one had applications just as worthy, the only difference is she was above the line.. The good news is there are a lot of other options if the goal is to commission and a lot of them come with possible financial assistance for school. Good luck to everyone figuring out the right plan B or C!

Agreed. These are amazing, highly qualified and motivated kids and the selection boards have a tremendously difficult job selecting the best candidates. Some applicants who will make great leaders will not be selected for a scholarship out of high school, but as you said, there are a lot of options to reach that goal.

DS was informed earlier this week that he did not get a 4-year NROTC scholarship and that he was, actually, the next one on the list when the selections ended! DS is a 4/C MIDN College Programmer at his school of choice already, so no major decisions were riding on it, just wants the path to commission and the financial help. 3-year sideload application already in the works.

@ProudDad- ty for your feedback. We do realize that, like the SA, the whole candidate is considered. DS had just rec'd both his ACT & SAT scores and was nervous. ACTs were pretty low and SATs were 1250, so not great but a starting point. DS was advised to focus on one (ACT or SAT) and really work to improve that score. DS seemed more comfortable w/ SAT, so he will work on improving there. Other stats: Boys State & NASS in June, class rank: 11, GPA: 4.0 unweighted/4.4 weighted, NHS, will be 4 yrs varsity baseball, 2 yrs hockey, comm council, drama club, debate club, model senate, volunteers local youth hockey, organized fundraiser & clinic for local charity w/baseball team

Appreciated the feedback. This is a long process so reminders here & there are always helpful & well received:)

Well, he sounds like he is well qualified overall. A team captain position wold be nice if he could snag that. And I agree with focusing on one or the other now that he has taken both the SAT and ACT. My DS left room for improvement after taking both exams, but he decided to focus on the ACT and was much improved his second taking. I honestly don't think he prepped much, if at all before taking the first tests. Good luck to him!

Yes he is hoping for Capt which is one of the main reasons he organized the clinic/fundraiser to show coach his leadership. Typically Jrs are not picked, so he felt he really needed to do something to "step it up". Cross our fingers!

I would like to pass on some advice given to to my DS from a friend and USNA graduate. When DS applied to SA's and NROTC he was told to work on LEADERSHIP! Most candidates are academically competitive when they apply. Of course GPA and ACT/SAT matters but the leadership is what can set you apart. DS took this to heart and went to work, became a peer mentor and ran for student council. Was elected JV team captain and then Varsity swim team captain. Senior year was elected class president. The advice he received to work on leadership has been invaluable. He received an appointment to USMMA (he respectfully declined for a NROTC scholarship) and has never looked back. We truly feel so honored to have our DS given this opportunity! So for all of those looking for a future scholarship, if your grades are there, look for the leadership opportunities. It will pay off and help you in the future as you lead others. Best of luck to all!

Sorry this was for another post, still if somebody as the NROTC and AFROTC Board days please post it here, can't find them anywhere.

Navy holds a board about once each month, starting in September. Last year @NavyNOLA posted the dates when they became available. I don't believe they are posted publicly. I don't have any info on Army or Air Force.

Army dates for this upcoming senior class are as follows (According to the Army website)
First Board October 2-6, 2017 (submission deadline September 17)
Second Board January 22-26, 2018 (submission deadline for new applicants January 7)
Third Board March 19-23, 2018 (submission deadline for new applicants March 4)

Applicants are only boarded once, however, if they are not awarded a scholarship during the board their packet is reviewed, they are put on an OML (order of merit) list, and considered after the next board. For example my daughter submitted her application for the 2nd board and was not awarded a scholarship, she was offered a scholarship after the 3rd board. Good luck.

NavyNOLA,
What are ASR and MSISR? Can't find them on the acronym list.

Alternative Scholarship Reservation (NJROTC)
Minority Serving Institution Scholarship Reservation

It appears that in ASR Quotas in recent years have dropped from 10 per NJROTC Area to 5 per Area last year. Any idea what the quotas are this year?

Unless something changed from 4 years ago there were two board a week starting in Aug and running through until I think it was the end of March. Our DS received the schedule from the regional recruiter. No matter this will be a long wait for all. Our DD is now waiting like all the rest. Our DD has much stronger stats than our DS; however, you just don’t know what will tip the scale.
DD
Capt of two teams
Link Crew Leader
Spanish teacher, 4th grade (yes, recognized by the state)
Spanish H Society
Spanish H Society Historian
Legally Bi lingual
National H Society
National H Society Historian
Naval Academy Candidate

Rowed at the N Academy crew camp
Community and school vol hours +250
GPA 4.29
Top 5% of her class
SAT eng 790 math low at 640 (waiting on new results)
Her list goes on. There is no telling if she will get this. Frankly I’m thinking the math SAT is hurting her and could just be the end all, you just don’t know. In the end its all about waiting and hoping. All the best to all you kids. Remember if you don’t get this now you can apply again as well as seek out other commissioning avenues. Cheers and good luck.
