It is my understanding that even if you were awarded a 4 year NROTC scholarship, technically that scholarship does not become activated until you pass your PRT and weigh in when you report 1st semester. Is this correct.

I'm asking because DS received a letter from Pensacola informing him that he is over the weight requirement for his height and that he will need to report to the unit in the fall at the correct weight and be able to pass the PRT. The weight was not significantly over, in fact he was taped for one of the academies and would pass the BCA.....
This was a matter of timing. DS is an offensive lineman during football season, so he puts on weight for football, maxes at about 240 which is still small for OL (he's 6 ft 2). After football he loses the weight for baseball and gets down to about 200-205 which meets the height and weight requirements. In this case, he was on his way down when his physical was completed.....He's in excellent shape and would pass PRT.
Don't want the preliminary weight noted by the Board impact his scholarship when I know he is back down to where he needs to be now. I figured that all scholarship recipients were subject to PRT and weigh in before the scholarship is activated....and this letter probably just serves as a warning. Thoughts.

As long as he is fit to report to duty when he shows up in his fall semester, then your child will be fine.

I've read somewhere that you don't even need to be able to pass the PRT immediately... I think you have a year to do that

CO's have significant latitude here. They can choose to administer a PRT before activating scholarships. If a student is unable to attain a SAT (which is different than the commissioning standard of GOOD), the unit can decline to activate the scholarship until a SAT is attained. Less than a SAT is termed a FAIL. Different units do things differently. Many will activate scholarships before PRT results come out, as the PRT is not administered until a week or two into the semester. However, if they had significant concerns about someone, they'd handle it on a case by case basis. If in doubt, call.

As far as height/weight goes, if the student is over the weight limit, they will be taped in accordance with BCA. If they fail the BCA, there is a strong chance the unit will not activate the scholarship. Units are going to be aware of who their problem students are before they arrive. That letter from Pensacola serves as a warning to get within standards before reporting, so that scholarship benefits don't become an issue.

Sounds like it is a non issue if he is already in norm limits, and he has already gotten the scholarship, they are just given him a heads up so he is aware of what it takes to activate it. My DD activated 2nd semester and she knew she was going to and over Christmas break spent three weeks in Europe and gained almost 10 pounds (I didn't know that was possible). She weighed in a pound over, so they taped her and she passed. Not an issue anymore for her, but I have advised her of not doing too many trips this summer right before school starts, it is way too stressful!

3 years ago at ND, scholarships were activated before PRTs were passed.
4 years ago they were activated prior to PRT also....but I didn't know if anything had changed. I know he is within all requirements now and could pass the PRT also. My previous experience had been that the financial aid office already accounts for the scholarship when the tuition bill is due in early August so previously I only paid the room and board, the letter made me think that maybe that would be different this year since they addressed activation in the letter (but it did come from Pensacola and not ND)....but I know he will be fine, so I'm crossing it off of my list of worries. Thanks for all the replies.

I have a question about this, means when a candidate goes to a ROTC interview (Army/Navy/AF), Fall in their HS junior year ( 1 year almost before activation of scholarship if granted),I read they have to bring an statement of height & weight, so did they have to be already in the require weight in order to pass this interview?, or they can ve over the standars and be able to perform well in interview points, and of course need to be able to pass the weight standars for activation of scholarship?, big question here, my DD is holding the coming application this coming summer, because she fears to be DQ for weight in the interview (she is working in that now), any help will be thank.

Question, did you son went to the interview for this scholarship and have to bring a weigh & height report ?if so, did he was over the weight limit and still pass interview and was granted the scholarship?....Im asking because my DD is in the same boat, she still a Junior in HS, but want to apply next month to start the process and be in the first board around October, but is not sure now, she is working in her weight and fears to be DQ in the interview for weight even she still will have 1 more year before going to College and be ready to activate the scholarship if granted, any word of advise will help us.Thanks, and Congratulations to your son!!

For Army ROTC the height and weight is part of the physical fitness test form that you download from the ROTC portal. The height and weight goes on that form. The height and weight does not matter for the scholarship it matters when she gets on campus before she activates. She will not pass her Army physical fitness test if she is not at the required height/weight. I hope that helps.

My DD's height and weight was checked and recorded when she went for her interview. I guess this varies...
