Hello,

I applied and received an Air Force type 7 scholarship. A history on me is that I had Ewing's Sarcoma, a type of bone cancer. The cancer was found as a bump on my thigh in May 2015. I had surgery to take it out, and then an other surgery to take out more of my thigh shortly after it was discovered as Ewing's Sarcoma. No signs of Ewing's Sarcoma were found after the initial surgery, including in the second surgery. I still underwent precautionary chemotherapy and I have been off treatment since January of 2015.

I went through DoDMERB and was medically disqualified due to history of a malignant tumor. It then went to the Air Force waiver authority (AETC/SGPS) and I was denied a waiver. The criteria for waiving it would be 5 years off therapy with no signs of cancer. As I am doing ROTC, the earliest I would enter the service would be in May 2021, and my 5 year off therapy mark is January 2020.

Is there any way I could make an agreement with AFROTC HQ to still be able to attend college on scholarship for all 4 years, but if the cancer returns before January 2020, I would have to pay back everything given to me from AFROTC? I know this may be a stretch but I'm not going to give up easily on a dream of mine.

No, that is not possible. In order to receive scholarship benefits you have to be contracted. In order to be contracted, you need to medically qualified.

Your only recourse is either to delay going to college, or to try to join the military after you graduate.

I'm sorry, people always say that there is a way around everything but that doesn't seem to be the case in this situation. Like the other user said, the only way is to delay college for a few years or wait to join the military later.
